Am I crazy or is this guy?
Ran across this 1971 stepside no motor or trans, asking 3K. This seems insane to me. I offered 1K, he said nope and no other discussions.
http://www.classiccarsofsc.com/2011/01/4742/ Is 3K a fair price and I just under value a roller?

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
there's a reason why his 'Field of dreams' is so full... he is overpricing it all. While that short step seems to have a good body (It's been painted at least once which could be covering a gallon of filler), it is over priced by at least 22 hundred IMO.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
I think offering a grand was generous. That poor truck looks like it's. Been through the ringer

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
Buy the best bodied vehicle you can find. Engines/transmissions are easy fixes. Body/paint cost real money, if you don't have talent. Don't have any other comment.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
Ok great - thanks guys. This place is 2 hrs from here, so just looking online is tough to judge. But figured if he would bite it would be worth the trip. Oh well, wife wasn't real happy about me getting another until this one is done

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
I don't think you are crazy. I would say more like $2,000 in my head for this truck. $3k seems a bit steep for something that needs a new back window, tires, who knows about the wiring situation, no power brakes, dents and dings, needs paint unless you are rat rodding it. I bet this guy got the truck for free for hauling it out of some Grandma's garage.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
You offered 1000 over the phone or held out ten 100 dollar bills in your hand when you made the offer? I wouldn't give a guy who tried to lowball me over the phone or by email the time of day either but when he holds out cash greenies in the hand we are now negotiating.
I won't even go look at something if I don't have enough cash on me to either buy it or give a fair deposit to hold it until I can go get the cash out of the bank to pay for it. I expect the same from anyone who wants to buy something from me. I will say that 3k is way too high for a truck that you can't get in and drive the two hours home and expect to get there with no issues. Otherwise it depends on the stash of pieces you have at home as to what it is worth. If you have an engine, trans and radiator that truck won't take a lot to be able to drive it to town and back and it's probably in better shape than my 71 GMC 3/4 ton except for the broken glass. |

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
The guy is proud of his stuff thats for sure. BUT if its as solid as it looks, its worth more than a grand You would save more than that in just bed parts alone.

$1,800 to $2,000 upon inspection that it's NOT a rust bucket.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
Say what???? That guy spends too much time in his field of dreams. One thing that seems to go along with any "classic car" ad is a "classic bs salesman". If the body's decent, that truck minus motor/trans would be worth $3k (without a busted window and the dents and with an ashtray for cryin' out loud) That's a $1,500 truck from here. It is true you can't offer 1/3 of asking price before looking. I always tell people come look it over, then explain why you feel it's worth so much less. I'm reasonable and will drop a price...to a reasonable buyer.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
$3000 is a lot steep for a roller here in the Midwest. Rollers or Non-running trucks go for about $1000-$1500 here. They are all full of rust up here though so maybe I'm out of my element talking about trucks in SC...
I got this for $3000 running and driving with a V8 and a TH400. Bought it from a guy up in Ohio. It might need a little rust repair here and there but I'd say it was worth the $3000 for what I got.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
i have seen some of his ads up this way. everything seems a little over priced in his ads but, i have never seen any of his vehicles in person. take a magnet with you. i have seen some sellers change the story they give me over the phone when i pull a magnet out.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
I agree he seems very proud of that truck. I think it's worth more than $1000, but probably not a whole lot more. On the phone its hard to judge people sometimes. I bought a roller with no front clip or bed for $250 and I'll probably end up spending another $500 just in little parts and pieces beyond the expected fenders, hood, grille, bed, etc. So I know there's value in it being complete. If the motor was in it, then you'd at least have the hardware, brackets, etc that I'm chasing all over the place right now.
It seems like you can get a driver type truck that you can work on as you drive for $3000. Who knows, in person he would probably get more talkative if he saw your $1000 and thought there were a few more hundred where those came from?

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
Sounds like a salesmen to me "Give me a call so we can talk about how we can make my car yours" gets me everytime when a salesmen says something like that. When we were looking for trucks for my father the salesmen wouldnt tell us the price until we came in and sat down and "worked on what he can give us for his old truck" and so we did and after he showed us what he would give he said "so what do i have to do to put you in this truck today" and my father laughed and said "give me more for my truck and take more off the price of yours and we'll see" of course he didnt buy the truck and the salesmen wont even talk to us anymore.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
out here $500 MAYBE, i looked at one very close to that recently and offered the guy 250 with a motor and trans in it, he didn't know if it would run or not so i offered what i figured the body/frame etc would be worth in parts. IMO he's smoking crack if he thinks it's worth 3 grand.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
I see RUNNING/DRIVING trucks here in BETTER condition than that for $3k all day long here. I know where there's a nice little '67 shortfleet not far from here with no dents and a very cool patina on the original paint that you could drive off in right now for less than $3k...
I wouldn't pay a dime over $1500 for a solid, rust free roller, but that's just me. And it'd have to be d@mn nice one!

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
I agree with all of you guys. I did low ball, but hoping he would challange my offer, but instead he said he would wait for someone who really wants it. His prices are real high -I just have a hard time finding solid trucks around here at a good price.
Is there a better state / city I should look for trucks?

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
The lower states would be your best bet honestly. that truck will rott away before he sells it for that price... Up here there was a very nice 71 going for 3000 and that went pretty fast, honestly if i wasnt still paying for mine now itd be in my drive way right now, cant imagen the future wife liking that to much.

Re: Am I crazy or is this guy?
Id keep looking, that truck has been hacked up....who knows what else is wrong with it once you get into it. I know that the guy needs to make a living but, he needs to turn off the speed channel. 1K would be the highest Id offer.....
