just to add more info on "Hi Hump" vs" Low Hump' trans covers

I swapped a 454 into my 69 a couple of years ago. The ruck was orginal with a 350/turbo 400 and a factory low hump trans cover. I think I know why the factory put a hi hump with big block/400 applications. I have spent two days trying to replace the oil pan gasket on my truck. I finally slid the trans back about 5 inches and jacked the motor uo about 5 inches to gain clearence to unbolt the oil pump and remove the 7 qt. pan. It may have been possible to just remove the hi hump(if I had one) and raise the rans high enough to get the pan off. I think sometimes you just can't beat the engineering of GM.

Great Something to look forward to.

I'm looking at doing a 454/4L80E on my low hump.

In the past, I've built two big block trucks with low hump cabs. Both of them worked fine as long as I had nice new cab mounts. 40 year old saggy cab mounts always let the cab rub the transmission. Some fresh ones and you had enough clearance to pass your hand between the cab and trans.

Never-the-less, changing a big block pan gasket brings the suck no matter which cab you have. I did rod and main bearings, oil pump and pan gasket on my 454 dually welding rig last summer and sprung for the nice Felpro one piece gasket and it made the job so much easier. Still, sucked though.

Kind of off topic but just to be sure if I get a new carpet for my truck I need a high hump carpet? Factory 400 big block auto.

I always loved those one piece oil pan gaskets. When they first came out they were pricey, but still way nicer than fighting a 4 piece PITA. Nice tip!
