Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

And if you had to pay into the 7000 to 10000 range for a fairly good stock one would you still do the modifications to it. Or do you prefer the 3000 or under priced ones for that? I found a good truck but he's kinda high price wise, cause it aint that perfect.

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

Paid $500 for my 50, it was totally disassembled and had the usual rust. The seller had purchased every replacement panel from LMC and they were included in the price I paid. He had also bought all the rubber, glass and door, and a new back window. The LMC reciept was for just under $700.00. I figure I got a discount on the parts and a free truck and title with purchase.

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

800 bucks cash for mine still 100% original. Got it home, swapped a coil, cleaned some plugs, cleaned the carb, and got some electricity to it, and we drove it around.

had very little surface rust, passenger lower cab corner, and lower front half of the pass. rear fender needed a bit of pounding out. other than that, the truck was SUPER solid.

the jewels are out there, just keep looking!

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

I paid $250 for my first and was mostly for the title and some specific chevy parts, and $1500 for the other pair of GMCs but they were in far better shape (not Flintstonemobiles) but rust in the usual spots and otherwise complete...

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

I have been down this road many times and every time I buy a cheap project I realize later it would have been better to pay a little more to start with a better vehicle (less rust or dents, more complete).

My current project was about $3000 plus about $1000 to get it home from Reno, NV. 1200 miles. I would've paid more for a better unmolested start but I'm pretty happy with it. The cab is very solid and it was a driver with a nice 327 in it. Then a year later I find a big window 95% original in my own town for about the same money so of course I bought that too I think that would be a much better truck to build but I can only tackle one at a time and small window build is already underway.

I traded a F#*d Tempo and $1000 for the truck in my avatar, he was asking $3500. I drove 2.5 hrs each way to get it and would've gladly paid $3000 cash for it, this was about 10 years ago. It was a runner with a 350/th400, new glass and wiring, lots of bondo and 'glass in the cabcorners and it was a longbox. Otherwise it was stock, took a couple years on&off to turn it into the truck in the pic. Here it is the day before I did the flames, freshly painted in the brightest yellow I could find... sorry for the crappy pic, it's a scan of a photo.

Please understand that these trucks are pretty hard to come by in northern Canada in any kind of decent shape.

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

I paid $6K for mine last year. I thought it was too much but I had been looking specifically for a 57 for a while and this was the best one I found for under $18K. It came with corvette wheels and a leaking but low mileage 350. It doesn't have much rust, and doesn't need any structural patch panels so I guess it was an OK deal. The PO wanted $7.5K for it and refused my $6K offer for a few days. This is the pic from Craigslist when it was advertised.

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

If I had to do it over again I would buy the best original I can find, then start fixing.

Maybe if you can and like to do bodywork it might be a different story. Patch panels appear to be cheap, but having them installed isn't.

My cab on my 59 GMC cost me $6000 to get into primer!

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

I paid $375 for my 59 in 1976. I am the third owner, it had a little over about 160K miles on it. It was a working driveable truck, first year was trips up to northern AZ camping. In 77 we lived in it for two months while we toured the western US. After college drove it to Boise (turned over 200K on that trip) and it was my DD and camping/hunting rig until 2000 when I started the current rebuild. In 85 converted to 4wd. Speedo quit working at 205K but I estimate I put about 100 K on it between 80 and 2000. Here is a pic from the 1977 road trip and off-road in 1987.

I cant fathom why anyone would ever pay $9k for a new cab that's not even in primer yet. You can pick up a cab off Craigslist for a couple hundred, get it sand blasted for another couple hundred, buy all new patch panels for another couple hundred, take it to a body shop and have them put the new patch panels in and primer it and be WELL under $9k in total cost. I've know guys that have bought cabs for under $200, and by the time they have primer on they have less than $500 invested. Of course, they did the work themselves, but patch panels aren't that difficult. I'd much rather spend a grand on parts and tools and try it myself.

I guess some people just have too much money

I agree with you 100%, my first 56 only cost $200 and I made a nice driver out of it. These days I've learned to do pretty much everything on my projects myself which helps to keep the cost reasonable. However, there are some who don't have the tools, place to work or the time and/or patience to do it all themselves. Even so, I agree that 9k for just a cab seems just a tad spendy, for that money plus what it would cost to build the rest of the truck I'm sure I could find a better way to go even if I didn't want to do any "dirty work".

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

$600.00 is what I have in this beast but the only thing I can use is the cab but it is solid and I sold the rest of it for $1000.00 so I guess you can say I got my cab for free + $400.00 bucks wo0t w0ot

now all I need is a doner truck, anyone know where to find one with a good bed and all the sheet metal for the front and the running boards?

Re: Curious what most here have paid for thier trucks

I paid $50 for my '56 panel and $400 for a '57 2 ton for parts. There was also a '55 burb for parts that was $165 of the ebay. The 2 '53s plus an s10 frame was $1400. I feel that I lucked into some killer deals.

Then

now

parts trucks.

I've had so many and paid between $900 to $7000. The one I'm keeping is my '71 K10. I paid $7000 for it, added a GMPP 350 HO, cowl induction hood and some wheels. Thats about all the mods I've done. I would like to add a 4-speed to it one day.
