Rear End Gurus can i have a minute?
i am considering a swap from my current 63 C10 12 bolt rear end (pressed on back plates)to a Ford 9 inch. the reason is i want the 5X5 lug pattern and ease of changing gearing.
now my question is, what all is involved in the swap, what misc. parts might i need, and what about axle lengths (is there a certain length, car, or truck i should look for) thanks for your help after deciding on the rear end i will be upgrading all brakes to disc and adding wheels/tires. |

Measure your current rear end for the following:
axle to axle width Backing plate to backing plate width And then order a 9" from any reputable mfg. giving them the measurements they should be able to take care of you. The only other thing you will need that I can think of (other than brake stuff) is the weld on axle tube perches and a means to attach the panhard bar. edit: Moser engineering offers a complete Ford 9" rearend for our trucks. http://www.moserengineering.com/ Last edited by blackedoutharley; 01-19-2011 at 02:11 AM. |

Re: Rear End Gurus can i have a minute?
It's not going to be easy to find a OEM 9" that is 62" wide. Probably going to be from something like a Mustang or an early Bronco. Also regarding the 5x5 bolt pattern. The typical 9" is going to have a 5x4.5 bolt pattern, so the axle flanges will need to be re-drilled. If you're set on a 9", I say just have one narrowed to the right width and build it the way you want it. Also when building a rear differential, you can put whatever brakes and wheel bolt pattern you want on it.

I've been told Lincoln rears are sometimes used if you want disc brakes. The rear end is about the same width and has the 5 on 5 bolt pattern. I have one of the housings and the flange to flange measurement is the same. Not sure what you have to do to get it to bolt up to your driveshaft.

Re: Rear End Gurus can i have a minute?
If you were to use stock style 64-66 axle perch's and then a Super Track Bar... should be a fairly easy install. (Super Track Bar eliminates the panhard bar mounting to the rear axle and moves it to the trailing arm.)
Also, if you go with a multi-lug pattern wheel many of them fit 4-3/4 and 4-1/2 bolt patterns. (I have Wheel Vintique Chevy Rallies and they are the dual pattern, as well as many racing type wheels have the dual pattern set-up.) Sounds like an interesting build... keep us in the loop!
