NAP Underdash A/C system Install
My Nostalgic Air Parts underdash A/C installation
I chose the underdash system because I like the retro look of it and I didn't want to change out my Chevrolet heating system. The directions included with the kit are pretty decent but not very specific to a 1967-72 truck. The kit was complete except for a template and a filler piece for the clearance cut that needs to be made in the stock heater box. It needs to be cut to clear the blower motor on the evaporator. I recommend that you call NAP if there is not a template in the kit. Mine had no template and I called. They sent me some black plastic but not what I needed at all...so...I made my own template and filler. NAP did not supply these parts....most likely because each installation is a little different. I used some very thin guage aluminum to cover the hole in the heater box and then I put the sticky backed foam tape over it. Works great and it is hidden from view after the new a/c unit is installed. I removed my grille and my front bumper so I could work in the area a LOT easier. I suppose it could be done without removing the grille but I'm really glad I did. I also decided to install the LMC billet grille during this time. I think it looks really nice. The hood release they include is kind of hokey so I think I may convert to an inside cable release at some point. I drilled the 1.25 inch hole down low and to the left of the parking light wire hole. I will use the factory A/C line hole for the one of the hoses. I also drilled the two required firewall holes up by the blower motor wire. See pictures.... I had to remove my nice aluminium overflow bottle and go back to a plastic bottle on the inner fender. This is because I had the overflow mounted where the new A/C drier needed to go. There was not enough #6 hose in the kit to make up the lines I needed. I will recommend to the supplier that they include 8 ft of hose for the underdash kit. The supplier should also include the high/low binary switch wiring harness and boot. They also should include two more 90 degree #6 hose fittings and two more grommets. NAP was very good about answering questions and have stated that they will include more #6 hose and the fittings in their kits. Great customer service! I had the A/C lines crimped at a great shop called Maxxair here in Denver. They charged me 2 dollars per crimp...a total of 16 bucks....and they look beautiful. I then installed and connected all the A/C lines. I put some PAG150 oil on the O-rings before assembling them. Maxxair charged up the system for me last week and now it's blowing ice cold air. Looking forward to using it in the summer months.
