How do you put gas in your tank?

Stupid question I know. I searched and found a few things, but nothing that really helped.

Filling up my 78 is a pain, and not just because gas prices. I can't keep the gas from overflowing every time I fill it up. It always clicks off about 1/2 second after a gallon comes spraying all over the side of the truck. Even if I go snail slow, I can't ever hear/see it coming up the fill hose like I can hear it coming up on my 01.

Here is the fuel fill in question.

Re: How do you put gas in your tank?

I wonder if your vent line is plugged up or something....

I can hear mine as it gets close. At that point, I usually kneel down and pay attention to what I'm doing, but can "throttle" the pump to top it off without making a mess.

I should mention my filler neck is opened up (ie, not restricted for the "unleaded" nozzle) so I can actually see what I am doing.

Re: How do you put gas in your tank?

The guy I bought mine from replaced the tank with another year models tank. So my fuel filler is inside the wheel well. I get some wierd looks at the pump.

It puts the nozzle in or it gets the hose again....

Sorry, just had to. I do the trick of holding the nozzle out a little and at a severe angle. Sucks standing there holding it, but gets the job done so much faster.

I hold the nozzle upside down. It worked. I have no clue why, but it does.

Typically the reason I would not insert the nozzle all the way is because it would continue to click off too early rather than not clicking off soon enough and over flowing.

I also wonder if your vent tube is clogged causing pressure issues.

Re: How do you put gas in your tank?

The fuel filler is way too close to level. Thats your problem.

Dead serious thread, you probably don't have the problem on your newer truck, I never had it on our 88 K30.

I think some of you guys are misreading the problem, it fills just fine, the problem is it NEVER clicks off until after it overflows, no matter how slow, what angle I hold it at. I've seen lots of trucks with clogged vents that trip off 100 times while trying to fill up. That is not the issue here.

I do agree one problem is the fuel fill is too low and therefore the fuel fill hose is too short, this is one of the reasons I can't hear the fuel coming before it's too late and it sprays up. I filled it up using probably 1/4 flow last night and it still sprayed out with no sign of it coming.

I will check the vent hose though, thanks.

Re: How do you put gas in your tank?

I don't think there's anything you can do with that short neck to solve your problem, You need to trash that crap and hook the longer factory filler neck back up.

Umm what? I still have the factory filler neck. Nothing has been changed on my truck.

The pictures Trvr posted are not mine.

Re: How do you put gas in your tank?

My 77 does the same thing, it doesn't spill a whole gallon but it always runs down the side of the truck if I fill her up, I'm hoping when I repaint it, it won't eat up the paint.

Mine doesn't really spill a gallon, just a pint maybe I was just really angry when it did it last night because I was wearing my nice boots.

Eventually I plan on swapping to a rear tank between the frame rails and fill from the bed like I'm doing on my 67, but that won't be till I get ready to do the lq4 swap.

That's my problem, the fill hose seems so short I can never hear it till it's too late. I've resorted to waiting till it gets to 1/4 tank, then I fill up 10 gallons and stop. I pushed it to 11 gallons last night because I was filling lucky, and got it on my boots. That's what made me post this thread.

I've been filling it at full speed till about 8 gallons, then I go to about 1/4 flow, still does it.

My 76 spills as well. And with all the traffic noise, I can never hear it coming. I've resorted to not filling it all the way.

Re: How do you put gas in your tank?

i put mine in about 1/3 of the way. just enough that the fill nozzle will hang there. and i never ever top mine off. i estimate how much fuel i need and put in a gallon or two less. i'd rather not have eaten paint, gas on my boots, or that horrible dust/mud on the side of my truck from overflowed gas.
