prepping for por 15
Just curious on how to prep for painting my frame. The instructions say not to use anything solvent based. I was gonna blast the whole thing with some brake clean but now I am not sure...any suggestions on what to use?

i use there marine clean one thats one hell of a degreaser. Then i would wire wheel the rust if needed then use there metal prep converts the rust, wash that off scotch brite after that metal prep leaves a white zinc coating i knock it down a little with the scotch brite then blow it off and wipe it down with wax and grease remover.then ur ready for paint. Its a lot of steps but i done a lot of rears like this and they always came out mint.

I sandblasted 99% of the rust on the back, the front had the pain in the ass to get off undercoating but was kinda curious about some of the places that were soaked with grease and oil for years. my dad also flung oil all over yesterday from his chainsaw. I just dont understand why it say not to use solvent based chemicals. make me nervous to use an all purpose solvent to clean it lol. maybe i will go to my local jobber tomorrow and see if they have some marine clean in stock.... thanks for the reply!

yup i would tape off all treads IT would be a total pita to get a nut started notHing gets this stuff off make sure u wear gloves! it will stay on ur skin for weeks i learned the hard way lol

thanks! And i did get it all over my arms. I started brushing it on and decided to switch over and put it in my primer gun. WAY easier spraying this stuff than brushing and alot faster too. I am totally excited for the way it turned out. I'll post pictures later thanks for the help!

I sand blasted my whole frame when I did mine. If I saw more rust or grease I blasted it until it was gone then sprayed the POR on. Follow thier instructions (POR) closely or it will not work as advertized. POR is not UV protected, so you have to paint over it. When you paint over it the POR has to be SLIGHTLY tacky, if it is dry the primer & paint will peel right off. I did mine like 3 years ago now and it's OK. Spray POR on, moving along 1 frame rail, go back to the start point in 1\2 hr and start priming. After that wait overnight and then paint with a good enamal paint. jim

1984 K20 350M engine with 465,000 miles. Well, it's finally done!! Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!!
