driveshaft question
Should my 65 short c10 use a 1 or 2 piece drive shaft? There is a 1 piece drive shaft that came with the truck but I'm not sure if its right. Any help is appreciated.

I think that the 2 peice shaft is only for the 4 speed because there is no slip yoke.

2 piece drive shaft are found in longbeds, you my friend need a 1 piece.

Is it a SM420? (Super low 1st gear) mine is a short step that had this tranny with a 2 peice shaft that I swapped out for a T5 and a 1 price shaft.

I just bought this truck, it's my first early Chevy truck and the only clues as to what it had for a drive train are a rusty set of sbc headers and a one piece drive shaft that were in the bed along with a bunch of garbage, there is no clutch pedal so ill assume it was an automatic. Also does anyone have a picture of the trans cross member, and tranny mount setup? what should be there for motor mounts? Plans are for a Chevy v8 and a th350 which brings up one more question, what length tailshaft th350 do I need? I have a short one under the bench.

you will determine the length of your d/shaft when you get the rest of your running gear in. your old shaft may fit or it may not. why not give us a picture of what you have in the transmission area for crossmembers now in order that everyone doesn't have to speculate on what you have or haven't gotten as you cannot tell us to much

it was orig a std trans and someone put in an a/t. that crossmember back there is where the rear of the tran was mounted. i don't know how those frt perches work . chev or gmc?

quite easily. the bellhousing crossmember is gone. one can see the different colour inside of the frame rails and you can see where the lazy bastards just cut it off at the top of the frame rails.. that is not the sdt a/t rear crossmember that is there and looks like some bracing for something was scabbed into the inside of the frame rails in frt of that trams c/member. need any more

The rear crossmember in the pic is just bolted on, it looks kinda like a trans crossmember from a 73-87 Chevy truck. if I was to stick with what is there for motor mount brackets would I use the clam shell style motor mounts?

perhaps you have a chev body on a gmc frame. coils or springs in the back. if it is a chev there should be a matching ser# on the top of the frame in the area of the str box.
these trucks see a lot of changes over the years by people in their backyards due to accidents and so on. you nmever know until you really check it out ron |

It has a coil spring rear suspension, so it should be a Chevy chassis. It is so true about parts being swapped around, so far I have found several 1960 parts on my 65 like the grille,and tail lights and maybe even the whole bed, I still haven't figured out if the front suspension has been swapped or if someone just swapped the spindles as it has 5 lug disc brakes up front. As soon as the snow lets up a little I will check the vin number on the frame to see if it matches the cab.
