power window motor

How hard are these to change? My passenger motor is about to die, and I figured while I've got most of the interior apart I'd change it. Seems like it's just unbolt it from the bottom, pull it out, unplug it, then swap in the new one. Am I right?

I never replaced one on our series of trucks, however I have replaced several on other model GM cars, a 86 6000 se that my friend owns and a '96 buick roadmaster. Both of which I think would be a bit more complicated than our trucks.

In both cases the hardest part was getting the door panles off. From that point it was pretty much unbolting them, getting them out of the track assembly and then just replacing them.

Can't claim the truck will be any harder/easier however. I assume most GM stuff is similar.

I have heard they are a friggin nightmare...I need to change both of mine. Lemme know if you find a good price on them I may get at least the pass door motor first. I just dont look forward to changing it.

I've got the door panel off, that's easy on our trucks. I'll try to give it a look tonight and see what it will take. I think the hardest part is going to be getting the motor in and out of the small openings in my door!

If I understand it correctly we have to drill out the factory rivets, support the window so it wont fall and then put in the new motor and use nuts and bolts in place of the old rivets. all in a small area!! DOH!

Changing windowmotors is a 15 minute job.
Tape the glass to the door so it won't fall down
Unbolt the motor/regulator from the door (4 bolts),and slide it out of the glassframe.
Put the regulator in a vice so the position cannot change, and drill out the rivets of the motor.
Put new motor in same place with little bolts (instead of the rivets).

It's Easy.

My passanger one has acted like it was going to die for a long time - I sprayed some silicone lubricant and it works 2X as fast! I only did it to the top, so I need to take the door panel off and do the bottom of the track - much better!!!!

I've done that too. I think part of my problem is the track felt is shot on one side, so I imagine it either gathers up to slow down the window or is just so worn out that the window catches somewhere. I had to have my driver side motor replaced a few years ago, so I figured it was about time to do the passenger side one.
Midnight, post the pictures here!

Hey Greg,As far as switching the motors out, it's really not that bad. Pictures would make it easier, but here is a brief verbal description of what I did with mine (posted on a similar earlier post):

You have to remove the inner door panel. You then loosen the 4 bolts that hole the window regulator assembly (actually there's 2bolts and 2 studs) and unplug the electrical connector from the motor. You then finesse the whole assembly through the hole that is upper right corner of the door - passenger side (driver upper left). You may need to remove some of the door latch linkages to make room. Make sure you somehow support the window so it doesn't come crashing down. You can then remove the motor from whole assembly. Reassembly is the reverse procedure.

I never did replace the motors, but the description of that process, as described by a number of the guys makes sense and sounds right. It'll be more clear once you have the regulators out.

Have fun and get the bandades ready.
