Id like to put an automatic column in my 64 and take out my floor shifter. Has anyone had experience with this...I have a 700 r 4 so that might make this not possible.

Any idears?

I put a 68 column in my 64. I have a 4L60 (same shift pattern) and it seems to shift great, I just need to get the new PRND321 indicator for it. It pretty much went right in, I just had to make 3 modifications.

1. Wiring needed to be spliced into the factory harness. The connectors are different, but the colors are the same. The 68 column had 1 extra wire, I think it was the brown one for the side markers or hazards, which neither were necessary for the 64.

2. The attachment point under the dash had to be changed. The 64 column bolts with the 2 bolts from the bottom, the 68 is a clamp style. I just used a nice piece of rubber hose that fit right around the column and clamped it in, it's a nice tight fit.

3. The 68 column is about 2 inches longer IIRC. I just cut the rag joint off and welded on a universal joint to the end to go into the box.

There may be a much easier way to do this, but it worked out good for me, plus I like having the more positive feel of the universal joint.

Yup, I got a stainless Lokar style shift linkage off of ebay for $40 and it is fully adjustable so you can adjust it to a shorter sweep to accommodate all the gears. It was originally a glide column, I don't think there are any differences between the 2 and 3 speed columns but it was able to fit all the gears nicely.

i have 64 truck automatic column for a powerglide.put a 700r4 in it kept the column works great but indicator wrong. oh well looks original.

here is mine with a van tilt column. 700r4 trans, 3 speed column. lokar makes a floor shifter for that also.

CPP has a nice "foriegn" column that closely resembles the 71-72 tilt and it can accommodate the 4speed shift indicator. If you find a stock column and need to repair or rebuild, your looking at more $ than the CPP one will cost you. I know because I bought two columns for my 65 and now I have one to rebuild ( I dont want to just put one in there that isnt fresh) If I had to do it again, I would go with the CPP one.
