Unhappy 700r4 trouble

i think that my 700r4 just crapped on me. it takes forever to shift and it only shifts into 3rd gear at about 85mph. then i can slow down to cruising speed and then after a while it will shift into 2nd again. tried adjusting and readjusting the tv cable but made no diffrence. i changed the oil and filter about 200 miles ago and it ran good right after that till i went to town yesterday. i think it needs a rebuild so how much do you think would be reasonable for a quality kit for me to rebuild it myself and where to get it at. thanks.

Before you go too crazy, take the governor out and see if the plastic gear is worn away. This has happened on two of my 700R4's and after replacing the gear one of them is still going strong 15000 miles later.

The governor is behind the round cover on the driver's side at the rear of the tranny (on the side, not in the pan).

how hard is it to get that out? do you loose any oil when you take the governor out? what is the part number for that gear if it needs replaced? id just like to know before i get in over my head while its in my barn getting worked on by myself before i go to my cousins and have him work on it. something i forgot to mention earlier is that when i block up the rear end and put it in overdrive it will shift just fine then if that makes any diffrence at all? thanks

Once the cover is off, the governor just slides out.

You will lose about 2 ounces of ATF when you take the cover off.

I don't have the part number off hand, I can get it.

If the gear is bad it will be apple cored, like this:

well i went out and checked that but the gear was good yet. now i didnt loose any oil at all when i did it. and it didnt seem like there was any oil in the governor valve very recently anyway. so would anyone have an idea on what it might be then? check ball in the valve body? throttle valve sticking? im open to suggestions.
