Before you do anything else, I'd spray some lithium grease on the moving parts and a little silicone in the channels. You may be surprised what a difference it makes.

Re: Window regulator, restore or replace?

i'd actually spray the heck out of them with wd40 first to clean out any petrifried crap then once clean and working well i'd spray them with the lithium grease to lubricate for a prolonged lifespan

Re: Window regulator, restore or replace?

Cleaning & lubricating is fine, but if the small plastic wheels which roll up and down the channels are worn...and lets face it after forty odd years of use!!!
I replaced mine.

Neither... if cleaning etc does not work I would contact a member like Randy "teeitup" , Dennis "sharpie" or someone that has nice original.
Hope that helps Paul

Re: Window regulator, restore or replace?

I would check the weather stripping that goes down the door frame and down through the long brace in the door. They tend to break up and keep the window from sliding like it should. Also the long vertical weather stripping on the vent window. The fuzzy stuff comes off and blocks the glass from working good. Most of the regulators I have seen work fine if you clean/grease them AND CLEAN OUT THE TWO GROOVES that the glass slides in.

Re: Window regulator, restore or replace?

Finding a set of original regulators that have not been rolled up and down much in their life would be rare as rocking horse s**t, when I took mine out to clean and lube I discovered that one of the plastic wheels on the PS had seized at some point in the past and worn itself flat on one side with continued use, the drivers side which sees the most use had all the wheels worn smaller with rolling up and down rusty channels which made them prone to fall out of those same channels. My replacements have been in and trouble free for nearly 3 yrs now, I'd say these parts are only as strong as the little plastic wheels on the ends of the regulator arms.

Re: Window regulator, restore or replace?

I've been using the same repop window regulator for about 10 years.I do keep it and the tracks lubed but don't really see any reason to complain about the repop.

Yeah, I'm searching for a solution before it gets too warm here. Repop from Classic Parts died after a couple of years. PanelDeland do you remember where you got yours?

Re: Window regulator, restore or replace?

I agree! first clean the regulator & lube it up. On some I've had the crank was striped out but, most will respond with a good cleaning/ lubrication/test. I have in the past bought the repop regulators I find the stock ones to work smoother& better! best of luck to you. cheers, Pat
