i cannot get to the site right now, otherwise I'd post it (not home and have horribly slow internet....) ANyhoo - the LMC truck catalog has a very good vin decoder in the front few pages of their 60-66 catalog. You can go there and look at it online - shows exactly the same as the paper copy. Sorry can't answer the question, but that is a good place to decode. If it's just an "i" vs "I" thing, seems that the dmv weenies are just being their usual helpful selves and that the guy that comes to verify would not have a problem with this. THEN dmv would take care of you with a note from him. Not sure though - anyway, good luck. Been thru a similar headache and I know it's no fun!

It looks like just part of your vin. The I is for inline 6 model, if it was a V6 there would be no I infront of vin. 1001. 1000 series is 1/2 ton. 01 is short bed.

You guys are great. Im working with a friend on mine whos a cop trying to figure this out. He said sometimes when unsure they will tow it to the crime lab and put it on a lift tear it apart . DMV here is why we dont want the goverment doing health care ! Super helpful understanding the i because the insurance company said all vins start with a number and theres a rivet at the top of it which blew the dmv brain up .The title shows capitol I . I feel a lot better with this info Thanks

Re: Newbe bought 66gmc VIN Problems

Another option that I recently discovered (when I lived in MD) was to go to a tag & title company. Never knew what that was, but someone gave me the hint because our local DMV usually required a haircut after getting your tags because they were so slow. It costs a little more, but you're getting somehting DMV has long since lost - service. I was in and out in 15 minutes with new license plates and registration - and they even helped me register it as a "historic" vehicle which saved me a LOT of $. In this case, the only stipulation on getting the historic tag (other than it being old) was that you actually own 1 other vehicle (so this one does not have to be classified as your primary or onlyh means of transportation). Of course don't know the regs in your locale, but just some options to consider. Good luck.

Side note the 60-66 GMC does not have the vin stamp on the frame.

Oklahoma has the same problem, their computer program does not accept a letter in the place where a letter shows up on our trucks, they just changed it to a one 1 instead of the I.
The vin is on the top of the frame flange just in front of where the motor mount bolts to the top of the frame. Another location for the vin # is on the web of the frame just behind the front cab mount (all on the drivers side of the truck....my GMC has the vin in both places but the one on the web (side of frame) the numbers are spaced out. Kieth

I just went out and checked a 1965 GMC that I bought as a parts truck, it has the I in the vin on the door but does not have any numbers on the frame, sounds like you need to get a set of stamps and put your own VIN on the frame of your truck, be sure it is a I not a one so they match.

I just posted another picture to show exhaust location and noticed that the vin showed up on the frame here is one of the spots that the vin shows up on my 66 gmc

Re: Newbe bought 66gmc VIN Problems

Had a similar problem when I bought my 64 Flatbed. It has a "California" assigned VIN and the idiot who created the title had it listed as an 1986, which made it subject to our extreme smog laws and testing. I almost parted the truck out over this BS. I had to go back to the DMV over something else a few weeks later and mentioned to the guy helping me the problem I had with the truck and he says that's an easy fix and wanted to know who told me I needed a smog check? I motioned towards a lady sitting three seats down from him and he just rolled his eyes and said yeah she really doesn't have a clue, handed me some "VIN verification paper work and told me to have any Peace officer verify the truck. My buddy just happened to be a Sheriff and corrected the year on the title. The best part was it didn't cost me a dime. Good luck on yours!
