03 z71 tranny problems

i was looking at a 03 z71 today.
specs: leather interior,60k miles, 4 inch lift. very niice on the outside. taking care of.

problems: transmission will not go in d or first, but will go once you put it in second and it drives fine after that, shifts good as well. just no go on first and drive. it was driven on a trail by a kid and it was broke when he went into a rut and pressed the gas while the back tire was in the air and it gripped when it hit the ground.

what could be the problem? simple fix? or does it need a new transmission? please help me, im a college kid needing a newer truck

Re: 03 z71 tranny problems

If it only moves in the manual 2nd gear position your Forward Sprag and Low/Reverse roller clutch are broke. If it moves in Low & second gear positions the Forward sparg is broken. Either way the transmission will need to come out & be torn apart.

I know around here you can find a used 4L60e for around $600 in working condition from the junkyard, so maybe look into that if it needs a new transmission.

Re: 03 z71 tranny problems

how well can you wrench is the big question, if your pretty good or very good, you could swap out the trans for a good used one, if your not and would need to take it to a pro, a rebuild would probably set you back a couple grand or more. If it were me,

1. pass on the truck.
2. have the owner now repair/replace the trans and then reconsider #1.

Re: 03 z71 tranny problems

i wouldn't just replace just the forward sprag and reverse roller. most shops wont anyway they will want to rebuild the whole thing
