BBW install delema

I found a BBW and had it cut out, since I have no skills with a welder, I am kinda stuck getting a body shop to do it. well, I went by there and asked how much.....I had to pick myself up off the ground because he said with paint and labor it would be between $2-3K, is that outrageous or is it right on the money for doing the job?

Thanks

Sounds like 30+ hours labor plus materials - not out of the question. When I was quoted $600 for rockers by a local body guy, that's when I bought rockers and a 110 welder - new toy, new skills; it's worth it in the long run.

Re: BBW install delema

I wouldn't trust a body shop to give you a really fair price for doing work like that. I think you should be able to find someone to help you for a lot less. Just try to find someone who doesn't have the overhead of a shop and who doesn't do most of his work on insurance claims.

Funny you should ask. I have my daughters this weekend and I was just telling one of them yesterday I wish I would've learned how to weld. I did a little when I was alot younger. Sorry Clyde, but don't give up just yet.

Re: BBW install delema

well a fine friend you are!

Just kidding, i did the same as you, took AG for 3 years, welded like a banshie then....but the old mind and steady hands have left me years ago. I drive mine almost every day because I like it more than my 30MPG rice burner. So I think I would go through withdrawal if I had it locked up for very long and nothing I do seems quick anymore.

I have a small shop with little to no overhead and I'd still quote around $1800.

Re: BBW install delema

There were some threads on this conversion and they detailed using panel adhesive. I dont remeber the details but it may offer a solution to your problems. Just keep looking, also. If you could disassemble the cab, perhaps someone could put the piece in for you.

Re: BBW install delema

Timjt, I will keep that in mind for sure.

Protrash, I was thinking that exact thing. The thing that blows me away on his price is because i told him it would be gutted and ready for him, driveable but nothing in the interior. I am still thinking about it...... I completely understand $1K or maybe $1200....but I had no clue it would be that high, without the panel too, I bought the panel already.

I understand completely. It's why my trucks aren't finished; I cant justify the prices, but it takes forever to get the stuff done by myself.

Re: BBW install delema

Timjt, I would love to, but my boss has this issue with me leaving during work hours, weird huh? Send me some pics and I will offer my opinion.

Protrash,

Here is the thing, I dont NEED the BBW I just would like it, my truck is really nice as it is, driveable, presentable (not perfect), runs fantastic and is reliable. I think I would rather spend the $2-3K on a new toy, like a vintage travel trailer or something.

Mine was done w/panel adhesive & a few well placed spot welds.

Doing the panel swap alone wouldn't be that big of a deal vs. prepping & painting the cab interior. Did you price it both ways? Maybe do the BBW swap now & get it in color later?

Re: BBW install delema

I didnt do it with just the swap, I did it as the package. Paint and all. I might try it that way. Thanks Scoti

Does the panel adhesive do the trick? Did you do yours?

Re: BBW install delema

yea I also thought of that too, I had found one but the guy sold it while I was on my way to look at it. I have a line on another one, but it is up in northern extremities all covered in snow, but supposedly really rust free. but again, I already bought the inside panel, well I paid for it, should be here in a week or two.
