Can anyone tell me if you can can the oil pan in a 68 truck without having to jack up the engine? My pan is leaking and I am goin to put on a stock pan and felpro gasket.Thanks for the help Brandon

engine needs to b lifted about 4" to get pan off

It was always a filthy hoowah when I did it...hardest thing for me to clear was the flywheel. It can be done though...I would strongly suggest the Felpro one-piece with the metal insert...no leaks whatsoever since I installed mine...

Whats a good recommendation for rear main seal+Oil pan gasket, I went with cheapo gasket and now my truck leaks oil

2 piece rear main seal, 1972 block

I had to lift the engine and the trans to pull the oil pan from my 72.

I raised the engine at least 4" seperated the trans and slid it back 4", removed the flywheel and then reached in and took the oil pump bolt out all to get the pan out-the amount of foul language surprised even me!

Pull the fan off and raise the engine as high as you can get it to go. One other trick that helps is to make sure that the counterweight on the first journal of the crank is up out of the way. It helps if the crank is sitting so the piston is about halfway up or down in the cylinder.

I'd for sure go with the one piece pan gasket and the top of the line Felpro rear seal.

You will have to drop the starter to get at the right side pan bolts and taking the oil filter off first might give you a little more wiggle room on the drivers side.

And drain the oil first, I watched one guy who didn't do an extensive clean up on the shop floor after he went home and took a shower and changed clothes.

I guess I am going to work on this oil leak this weekend I hope its not going to to to big of a pain here is my game plan.

Drain oil and remove filter
Remove the fan
Unbolt motor mount rise engine as high as possible

Do I need to remove the hood?
Do I need to remove starter?

Just yank the engine and reseal everything. Put a coat of paint on it while you are at it. I swear it is easier to pull the engine than fight it in the chassis.

I engine only has 300-500 miles since the rebuild I just hate to pull it but if it makes it that much easier I might to it

it can be done with engine in place you will have to rotate the crank some if it's getting stuck on the crank throws. I've done a few like this 2wd unless it's a 4x4 you should be good to go.

Why not just pull the engine, and clean detail the engine and the engine compartment. At the same time reseal the entire engine?

I know it's a bigger job, but the hassle factor is much lower with a bigger pay off in the end.

I would pull the engine reseal and detail but I just put the motor and only has like 500 miles on it

Well I changed the oil pan gasket started at 6 and finished up 1:30 but I guess I have bigger problems the rear main is leaking.Is is possible to put a rear main in with the motor still in the truck?

yes, but it seldom works "well". Tool for the job is a "sneaky pete" - you will have to remain the rear main bearing cap, and you use the tool (it has a metal profile the same as the rear seal, but only covers about a 1" arc of the rear bearing) to push and pull the old seal out around the crank. I've done it this way ONCE and I will never bother with it again. At this point, you will come out ahead of you pull the engine. I know it's frustrating since you just put it in, but trying to PROPERLY install a rear main seal with the motor still in the truck is iffy at best. I'd pull it and install it properly.

I changed my oil pan out and installed a new oil pump then installed a new rear main seal and did not use a special tool to do it was fairly simple to do once I got the pan off.

Now I not sure if I need the single or double lip rear main seal the block is a 76 or 78 350 block but I going to buy the high performance seal
