Have you started by installing big block motor mounts? If so you should be able to change to any factory truck big block only parts.

Big block mounts were not offered in 4x4 67 to 72 models

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 4speed Suburban big block

I put a 396 in my 70 3/4 ton 4x4 and I ended up using headers for 73 up 2wd trucks with BBC's in them. You might have good luck with a chevelle header too.

Re: 72 GMC 4x4 4speed Suburban big block

I did this same set up on a 71 4x4 3/4 PU. I used stock manifolds. The trick is the bracket for the Z bar. Chevy had a special bracket that mounted to the engine. Look it up in the old parts manuels. I found one off a big block 4spd 2wd and it worked fine. Caution though. This part is hard to find and unless you see one on a truck it won't make since to ya. It's weird but it works.
