Speaker recommendations

I'm looking for some speaker recommendations for my truck. I just finished installing a Retrosound head unit (50 watts x 4 RMS/ 100 watts peak x 4 channels) with a dual voice coil dash speaker. So, I'm thinking about putting a 6.5" speaker on each side to get a little more "sound." Any recommendations on speakers? I'm not looking to run amps, etc.. Thanks!

Re: Speaker recommendations

Running off deck power, just about any quality 2 way 6.5 would work. What is your budget? Go to a local shop, listen to a few different ones, then pick one you like the sound of. You should be able to get a quality pair for about $60.

Just make sure they are running off deck power when you listen to them, you should get a similar quality of sound out of your head unit.

Re: Speaker recommendations

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I really don't have a "budget" in mind per se. It's more about cost vs. reward. I just don't want to spend a lot on speakers knowing that I'm never going to go high tech. There's a shop in town that I'll go by and spend some time listening. I would be really happy if I could find a good pair for $60.

Re: Speaker recommendations

I've had great experiences with Pioneer coaxials speakers.

Re: Speaker recommendations

I have another speaker question for you guys. When I installed the DVC center dash speaker, I made a simple frame that the speaker mounts to from underneath. There's probably 1/4" space between the speaker and frame. I didn't think about it at the time, but I'm now wondering how much sound loss I'm getting as a result of it. Should I pull it out and fill the space between the speaker and frame with fiberglass resin? I can take a pic of it if it will help you guys understand. Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Speaker recommendations

For a dash speaker, you don't need to worry too much about getting perfect separation between the front and back. The center grill in my '66 will have two 4.5" mids mounted to the underside of a plate I made (1/4" medite).

I will post up all my stuff when I get it finished. Hope to have everything done interior wise by the end of the month.

My 6.5" Infinity's were only about $50 on ebay and sound amazing. They require a bit more power than a deck offers, but you can find something similar by Pioneer/Sony with a quality sound off deck power.

Re: Speaker recommendations

Thanks for the info! At one time I actually understood this stuff, but that was a long time ago. I had a nice sounding system in my pimpmobile (80' Olds Cutlass)...I miss that car, it was the most comfortable car I've ever driven. Anyway, my best friend in HS (now an electrical engineer) was so in to audio at the time, so he taught me a lot. Unfortunately, I didn't retain much of it over the past 20 years. Anyway, so my Retrosound should be able to handle speakers with the following specs:

Max. Music Power (Nominal) 60 W (20 W)
Frequency Response 75 Hz to 20 kHz
Sensitivity (1 W/1 m) 89 dB
Impedance 4 Ω

Re: Speaker recommendations

I'd buy a set of Street Reference speakers from Memphis, they should sound really good to the avg person off of head unit power.

Re: Speaker recommendations

Pioneer TS-A1673R 6.5" 25w rms, should be able to find some for about $50, too. Something like that will sound full and if you mount them right, they shouldn't sound like a tin can.
