49 Chevy vs 49 GMC

I looked at a 49 GMC for sale last week and told the guy I'd buy it. He then told me he'd deliver it. I got a phone call yesterday from his buddy and siad he was heading my way with the truck but the hood had blown off and is noow missing. The truck is a pretty complete builder but I was after the sheet metal more than anything. Body and floor is pretty solid. My question is pow difficult is it to find a GMC hood vs a Chevy, cost difference and availability. Could I used the fenders and change hood and grille to Chevy if all esle fails. I'd still like to buy the truck if he will adjust the price.
Thanks

I know where there is a nice GMC hood for $150.00 and the top grille bar piece. He might have the rest of the grille now. The only difference to fenders is the GMC has the turn signals below the head lights.

Re: 49 Chevy vs 49 GMC

I owned a 49 GMC for a short time and I found out the GMC have a alot of differences to the Chevy. I loved the truck and regret selling it. I found this web site that might help you with some information. http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/page0375.html Is ther any damage to the truck? I think it would be hard to loose a hood and not know when you did and it not damage the truck in some way.

I just did the gmc to chevy conversion on my 47. The hood is in excellent condition. Look at my 47 build and you will see it.

Sounds like a great deal but I think we're just too many miles apart to make it fesable. I just bought a nice hood for my wifes 51 and paided $200 for it. I've been around tri 5 cars for a while but the trucks are all new to me so I'm not sure what's what on these trucks yet. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the link I'll take a look at it. As far as the the truck goes I'm not sure if there is more damage than just losing the hood. It'sa pretty solid 49 and it about 98% complete less engine and trans. I got it for $500 but now it needs a hood and whatever flew off with it. I really don't care about things like the heater, gauges,or frame for that matter. Plan on doing another C5 Vette conversion.

Re: 49 Chevy vs 49 GMC

I would think that it wouldn't be all that hard of find a nice hood for the G=C if you hunt a bit.
It depends on which nose you like the best and how =uch work you want to do.
