I got stranded with a flat..

Okay so I was coming down the highway and suddenly my rear tire blew.:/ I had no spare or jack in my truck.. Terrible, right?

I know 73-87 trucks had a spare tire mount, but mine doesn't.. Where can I get one of these?

All the bits and pieces are there, just have to order each one for the preferred mount type

Re: I got stranded with a flat..

Jack should be under the hood. My dad's 1984 GMC 3500 did not come with a spare because he didnt want to spend the extra $300 or so. He drove around with no spare for like 20 years- He kept a mounted spare at home.

Never had a flat. I restored the truck last year and bought the spare tire carrier because i don't want to be an hour away from home on the highway with no spare.

Re: I got stranded with a flat..

Only time I drove with no spare, no jack or 4-way bar with a cheater pipe was on the day I bought the C-30 and that was because I didn't know it had none when I went to buy it. Been there done that one time years ago getting caught without a spare or jack and it won't happen again. It made for a memory I haven't forgot.

For the C-30 I even went to the extreme and eventually purchased a better jack since, in my opinion only, the oem jack is junk to me if it has a flat tire.

I hate break downs and do all to avoid them. But flat tires are unpredictable and we can't blame the truck when sittin' on the side of the road without the tools to fix a simple flat.

I'd troll the scrap yards for a while before buying a new spare tire carrier, and get a hydraulic jack rather than a screw type if you need a new one.

Agree for sure! No need to go buy a new one unless you want it all perfect looking.

Found it at a local Tractor Supply store last December for $30. Never seen one before. Was using a bottle jack but this one with the ratchet stand built in for added protection looked to be a safer option. Here's a link/review from posting it in the tools forum.

For that money, I admit it, I bought two.

Re: I got stranded with a flat..

Why not adapt one of the new cable types to the old truck? Those old swing-out SOB's were a pain even when they worked right. The cable lift does all the work and is a lot easier.

+1

That is one of my to do items for my truck since there isn't even the swingout carrier on it.

Re: I got stranded with a flat..

A tire that is taken care of and isn't run low on pressure should NEVER just blow out, unless you have your head completely up your anus and run over something large in the road, driving on a tire with low air will ruin a sidewall quick due to heat buildup, Even if you don't see it on the outside its on the inside you can bet your ass. Been driving for over 30 years and have NEVER had a blowout. had a few flats, but no blowouts.

Re: I got stranded with a flat..

i put one of those cable type carriers on my 85 and works fine . the trouble with buying older trucks is that a lot of times the tire and jack is missing . i absolutely cant stand a spare tire in my bed . it would drive my crazy as i like full use of the bed space when hauling stuff . a lot of people round here dont even bother carrying a spare . . im never with out one in any of my trucks

I junk the factory jacks, too, usually pick up a decent bottle jack and it stores easier, too.

Re: I got stranded with a flat..

If you go with a factory under bed mount spare you may want to move the long support bolt on the outside forward about 1 inch so you can still install a frame mounted hitch. The standard spare set up will interfere with the hitch mount location, which is why many old trucks have the spare hardware missing. I bought the factory style spare hardware from LMC and kept the factory jack under the hood just for insurance and "factory correctness." I flip the spare so the tire valve is facing downward so I can check the air pressure when I check the pressure in the other tires. The new cable style spare mounts won't work with my truck since it has a dump bed, so the rear bumper moves down when the bed goes up, and there would be no way to access the winch mechanism through the bumper. I have found a spare in the bed is a PITA, especially when hauling dirt or stone.
