Kind of odd, how often do you drive the truck?

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
Make sure that your PCV valve is functioning properly and that the vacuum line is not plugged.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
My guess is this is going to turn out to be a leaking valve cover that is leaking onto the exhaust. Never seen an oil filter get so hot it would smoke.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
With the smoke coming out with some oil, sounds like you maybe gonna have a rebuild in your future? Just my $.02.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
It's called blowby. Your rings are going away. All motors have a little blowby. A good pvc system will help reduce it.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
Geezer is right on. What weight oil are you running? Do you have a PVC hooked up. The PVC will not reduce the amount of blow by but will send it back to the motor to be burned VS letting it go into the atmosphere. If it's running good and still has power I'd switch to some heavier weight oil to buy you some time. Watch your oil consumption. If your only going through a quart or so between changes then no worries. In Cali I would not hesitate to use some 20-50 in that thing.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
The numbers are not so important as the consistany between the cylinders. You'll want the high and low to be within 10% or so of each other. While a compression test will give you some indicators, a leak down test will pin point exactly what's going on with your engine.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
If your readings are correct. Number 3 and 8 have either a burnt valve or bad ring set in them. My 2 cents. Drive it till it quits, or you get tired of putting oil in it. Whatever comes first. Most of all, have fun with it, might be a chance to do a little upgrade on the drive train.

Re: smoke coming from oil filler
I think your engine needs a rebuild. #3 and #8 are definately your problem. most likely stuck rings. You could try some marvel mystery oil or some other similar product. With the engine sitting for that long thats the most likely cause. From the compression numbers the rest of the engine looks fairly healthy. I would try a few of the miracles in a bottle and then just yank it out and start over.
