Re: porper sub adjustment?

Does the amp have a crossover built into it? If the subs don't have a filter on them, then they are trying to play notes outside its range. You need a low pass filter or adjust the crossover on the amp to choke out anything above about 200Hz. They should sound tighter.

Re: porper sub adjustment?

are they made for a sealed or ported box, does it have the right amount of airspace?

I have my subs lower than 200hz even... I use an electronic crossover in my setup...

Re: porper sub adjustment?

A lot things can effect quality, but here's what I do to "tune" my subs:

1. Disconnect all highs (so you only will hear the subs)
2. Ensure the cross over on the amp is set to low pass and any cross over knobs are turned to the middle of thier settings (if you have any of them)
3. Turn the amps gain all the down and do not use any bass boost if available
4. Turn on head unit and set volume to 2/3's to 3/4's of it's capacity, and set Bass/equalizer to the middle of its range (play a CD that you know you like the bass tones of...I tune to a CD rather than radio or mp3)
5. Turn the gain up slowly until it starts to distort/sound bad and back it off a little.

This is to just get the amp to a decent level and still sound clean...there's more fine tuning as the speakers are broken in and you start hearing all frequencies, but if the speakers still sound muffled after this, it could be the box or the components causing it.

issue #1, Ipod, commpressed music,, they clip the lows and highs when compressing it.
