side steps
I did a search and I couldn't turn up anything.
Anyways after looking for close to a year I finally found some 55-66 side steps for my bed, unfortunately they are long steps. Has any body cut these down, wouldn't see why its not possible, just curious how much to cut out of the middle of these things. Thanks fellas.

Re: side steps
Classic Parts (and others) offer reproduction steps now:

Re: side steps
Yeah I know a few companies offer re pops steps but I couldn't see spending 100 dollars plus per step for a stamped steel part. I picked up these things for 20 bucks.

Re: side steps
I'm going into this blind, but can you measure the distance between the holes where they mount on the truck. That is if your bed is assymbled. And measure the distance on the long steps and subtract the difference. My .02 shooting in the dark. Now that I think more about it it might not work. The distance to the ends from the mount holes may be different. OK I might have talked myself out of that idea.

Re: side steps

Re: side steps
Yeah I'm sure its not going to be easy, but I'm not building a show truck by any means so I think I'm gonna go for it. It took me a long time to find these steps and I just settled with long bed ones. I think shorties would be even tougher.

Re: side steps
Almost every vendor I've run into sells the short steps, I've only found one or two with the long steps.

Re: side steps
Yeah but that takes me back to the first reason I never bought side steps for a rediculous price of 119 per step, I just couldn't bring my self to spend that much on steps

Re: side steps
With a little imagination and tools it can be done. It's only metal. Adapt and overcome. You can do it.

Re: side steps
Thanks for the help guys.
Does anyone happen to have the length of a short step so I can start choppin on mine. I think the best part to measure would be the upright part, it looks like the best place to get a good measurement off of.

Re: side steps
Mine are mounted on the truck, so the best measurement I can offer is 13 3/4". This is the distance from the forward edge of the fender to the forward end of the vertical wall on the step, as measured along the upper edge. I had a hard time keeping the tape measure in place for the photo, but held in place with two hands and looking directly at the edge of the step the dimension on mine is exactly 13 3/4".

Looks like I've got some cuttin to do. As for metal finishing the ribs the body guy at work gave me a good idea just to cut them out and smooth out the whole top, I think that will compliment the shaved drip rail very well. Thanks again!

Re: side steps
that's actually a pretty good idea....you could then get something like these to mount onto the steps if you wanted
I snagged them off CL for $35, the guy had them mounted on his 65 stepside before he sold it. |

Re: side steps
I like the smooth top idea, just one more custom touch. I mean who steps on them anyway.
