A Sad, Sad day.
So this morning a few friends come by and we had planned to do some work on my 64 ratrod project... We were planning on dropping the motor back in it for the last time after trying to relocate the motor back about 4 inches and lower buy 1. I had to grind a little on the tubular engine perches on my bench grinder I haven't used in likely 6 years. After making the needed modifications and starting to lower the motor in I hear an odd crackling noise from behind me. I turn around and look in horror as either a spark or the bench grinder itself ignited and had the entire side of my cedar 4 car garage ablaze. I tired putting it out with an old car cover as my two friends tried getting water to it, of course my dog had chewed my long hose up a few weeks back and the only hose left stopped just short of the front door. Eventually we did get the fire out but not before all the wiring, one wall, part of the roof and my oxygen acetylene rig were burned terribly(am amazed the bottles didn't pop). I also managed to burn my face and my old gray beard.... oh and I didn't get the engine done either. Anyway hope you all had a more productive day then I. Now I am off to work.

Glad you made it through it, I almost set my old shop on fire from a spark from grinding also when it landed on a rag I had acetone on.

Re: A Sad, Sad day.
On the positive side .... your place didn't burn to the ground, your project is not a loss & you are on this side of the dirt ...
Another great reason to have 2 or 3 fire extingies around the shop space. Good luck with the repairs ... may they be fairly inexpensive. Ratty 46 |

Beards will grow and drywall/wires can be replaced. At least you didn't lose anything that can't be replaced. I am glad everyone is safe, that is a terrible accident.

Re: A Sad, Sad day.
I appreciate the words of encouragement and well wishes guys. I am debating on calling my insurance company and making a claim. Funds have been tight the last year or so due to being out of work for almost a year. Got back to work a few months back but being out of work that long really hurt the savings account. Anyway thanks again for the concern and support.

Re: A Sad, Sad day.
Glad you and your friends are OK. Definitely a wake up call. Looked at my 2 fire extinguishers and both show needing recharge.

Re: A Sad, Sad day.
My wife thought I was nuts to have the following, One FE in the Kit. One FE is the workshop and 2 FE's in the Garage one at either end. Sh*t happens. AFter the small fire caused by the sparks years ago I got real spooked about fires.
AND when I'm fooling with gasolene like when I was starting the truck I dismount the FE it and ready if for quick action.
