truck ran like it was running out of gas

I was headed up a hill and the truck acted as if it were running out of gas, the gage does not work (on order from LMC) I made it to the top, coasted down the other side and luckily made made it to a gas station, but it only took 10 gallons. I am thinking, filter, pump or vapor lock. any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: truck ran like it was running out of gas

Could be a bad n.i.s. in the carb... usually caused by a clogged or missing filter. Just my thought...

After this, it ran ok, then twice again it did the same, I slowed to below 60 and it recovered. Thank you for your help, I will pull the filter in the morning.

No I haven't, great idea, I had a vette once and pulled it, it was trashed. Thanks for the comment on the truck.

Re: truck ran like it was running out of gas

it was running ok till the hill, then I put more gas in it (10 gallons) and it ran ok for a while again, then it happened again. I just got the truck last week and it is only the second time I put gas in it, I am running the mid grade gas, 89 octane, Mobil gas. I will have the sending unit out around the end of the week so I will look at the tank, Thank you for your help.

I think that the fuel pump is reasonable, and easy enough to change, that and the filter, Thank you.

Re: truck ran like it was running out of gas

is the tank properly vented? when you remove the cap if there is a "wooshing" noise you have a venting problem

Re: truck ran like it was running out of gas

Lot of good info already.

Check the rubber hoses, one is under the cab, the other is on the suction side of the fuel pump.

Check the filter in the carb, if you have a Q-jet.

It does not sound like a vapor lock, they normally happen at times of low fuel flow.

Good luck.

Re: truck ran like it was running out of gas

All good info, I just went through this in the last 6 months.

started with fuel filter in q-jet

make sure there is no filter between the tank and pump this will cause vapor lock

replaced fuel pump

replaced fuel cap

replaced rubber lines

rebuilt and tuned q-jet

Adjusted valves

replaced sock and sending unit. mine was trashed also (pic attached)

after all this I pulled a vacuum check on the engine it looks like my valve springs are done.

I hope yours is an easier fix.

what part of SD are you in?

mine started acting up on the 67 grade heading up to Poway.

My money is on the fuel pump. I had an 67 El Camino that would sputter and spit whenever a hill with decent grade was involved (Vantage hill Eastern Washington).

Re: truck ran like it was running out of gas

Thank you, I will definitely be looking into that. It will be nice to have the old truck running properly!
