muffler choice?

Well its about that time to get new mufflers I have a 350 with a cam and headders and its a lwb truck. I am getting true duals with no x or h pipe and am gonna have the new system exit either right before the axle or in the stock location. The sound I am going for is loud with no popping and not raspy. What type of muffler should I look at ?

Re: muffler choice?

look into a thrush or "turbo style" if looking for quiet/loud or a standard 40series flowmaster CK dynomax website for sound bites

Yes it is made by CHerry bomb, I would get the welded turbo, I really liked the sound.

Re: muffler choice?

Flowmaster 40s might be for you but they do have the tin can sound IMO. The MagnaFlows are probably best. Like other say, go to the manufactures website and listen to sound bites.

Re: muffler choice?

I'm running FM series 70's on my burb, with rams, H pipe exiting behind each rear wheel.

I like them, since they are loud enough for me to hear the cam on a cold start, and quiet enough to not give me a head ache on extended highway speeds. But, then I am probably just getting old...

Re: muffler choice?

I have a SB350, isky cam, Doug Thorley headers. I originally went with Flowmaster 40s, with exhaust exiting sides in front of rear tires.

Talk about noise, i'm sure the neighbors hated me...

I switched to FM 50's, still loud, but manageable.. After three years, I decided to run the pipe back & over rear end. Wow, it's at least 20% quieter. At least I can hear my stereo now...

Re: muffler choice?

I had a 2wd 350 vortec w/ dynomax super turbo mufflers that I never really liked the sound of; now Im going w/ 350 vortec, gmpp hot cam, comp 1.6 self-align rockers, ebrock perf. rpm intake, dyno headers, 650 ebrock, and flowsound mufflers. Im getting a driveshaft made then mufflers installed. Hopefully it will sound better w/ 4wd than with the 2wd.

Re: muffler choice?

Thrush is dynomax/walker. Turbos can be quiet, but can drone on some setups. Flowmaster has always droned on anysetup I've seen or had. Magnaflows are nice

Flowmaster Series 40, 2.5 inch all the way out the rear. 350 w/650cfm Edelbrock and a lumpy cam.
I didn't build the motor, so I don't know the cam specs.

I'm gonna run series 40's on the new build. But no big cam right now.

Re: muffler choice?

Im running 350 with 2 1/2 inch Cherry Bombs that dump out right behind the cab. Sounds great but its loud. Im looking at changing to something not so loud. I would like to be able to hear the radio at some point.

Shorty Chevelle headers, 2.5 inch Y pipe into a 3" FloJo dumped in front of the passenger rear tire..... well at least that what the plan is, everything is still sittin' in boxes...LOL

Re: muffler choice?

I have headers, 2-1/2 inch pipe, and 40 series flowmasters with turndowns that dump in front of the rear axle. There is some resonence inside the cab at idle, but it does'nt bother me. You could probly get rid of most of the resonence if you ran some tailpipes out the back or behind the rear wheels. Also my truck has the original 40-plus year insulation under the carpet so i'm sure that does'nt help either! I like my truck loud and obnoxious! Joseph

Re: muffler choice?

I've got dual stainless borlas under my nova. 350/350 combo with x pipe. Looks awesome, sounds great. They are quiet for regular driving and get louder when you get on it. I love them. Expensive but worth it to me.

Re: muffler choice?

When I get there I am hoping for a low rumble at idle...then when I get on it, heads will turn I am a ways from that though, but I like to gather the information of this thread, good to know for when I am ready.

Added: magwakeenercew2jh, I like the sound of those on your vid, and that classic Cali plate is sweet!!!
