i have a 61 apache. trying to find out what rear end i have. the center bolts on from the front but it has a cover on the rear. i want to change the gears out i have 411.

The only designation I have found for that style of rear end is the GM55T. They were used from 1955-62. Gears aren't that easy to find for those rear ends. The only gears I know of are 3.38's made by Yukon Gear. What you currently have would be 3.90's

If I were you I would consider changing that rear end out for a truck 12 bolt. There are lots of options for those.

I thought that I might add to the above in case you have a 3/4 or 1 ton. If so the 3/4 ton trucks usually had H052 axles with 4.57 gears and the 1 tons had H070 axles with 5.13 or something close to that. These were built by Eaton, Chevy used these While GMC seemed to use Spicer (later Dana) the 4.10 gears were available later in the 60s and 3.90 gears were available as aftermarket sets, which are no longer made. (or that I have been able to find new)

I forgot to ask what kind of ratio are you after?

i want all 340s. right now i can only do about 60 tops on the free way. i want to be able to keep up. i think its a 1/2 ton. i have springs in the rear. how can you tell ??

can i even do a 12 bolt. i was thinking nothing bolted up. i starting to think it might be cheaper to buy a 700r4

Yes a 12 bolt will work. That's what I mentioned in my first post

Is your truck a 4x4? A 1/2 ton will have 6 wheel studs. A 3/4 ton has 8 wheel studs.

no its two wheel drive. i am pretty sure its 1/2 ton. it has a 327 and a t350 in it. with the stock rear end. so what would the 12 bolt come out of???
