'72 GMC Interior Colors - Steering Wheel - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm looking to replace my steering wheel with a new unit but I've yet to find the correct color for it (LMC catalog, etc). The dash is sort of a brownish-grey. Is my best bet to buy a black one and have it painted to match? The fourth photo is one I found that looks somewhat similar but is probably more of a tan. Mine has a white horncap as well.

Mark, remove your horn button and look at the back side, that is the true original color. It has faded to appear white. Black would be an easy fix but be sure to paint the steering column to match.

I suppose I could try to restore the original wheel but am unsure how well it would turn out. I know there are kits available.

Here is mine I had it painted the guy that paint it match the color on the back side of the horn button. also painted the steering colum and the top of the dash with the same paint and it came out like it was never painted.

What's the going rate to have a steering wheel painted by a professional painter?

I dont no my hole truck was painted at the same time. I bought a new brown steering wheel for $50.00 from the parts board. Brown would be the color to buy if you are going to paint it to match.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for one to come along that cheap.

LMC wants $215. I've seen others online for $175.

Good original wheels in the color you need are almost impossible to find. These era wheels literally fall apart. For some reason, the aftermarket doesn't seem interested in providing this wheel color, which IMO is just as common as the saddle brown color. I would take your glove box door off (should be the same color as steering colomn and wheel) and take it to a automotive paint supply shop that can make this color in a spray can. After spraying, put a couple of coats of clear coat over it.

Perhaps a silly question, but how do they match the exact color without knowing a paint code, for instance?

A professional automotive paint store should be able to blend up a batch of paint if you give them a good sample. I believe they do a computer scan of the paint sample.

I can get you the paint code color that was used on mine.

The main O'Reilly's in town mixes paint. Spoke with them this morning and they can scan the paint on the glove box and match it up. I've used them in the past to mix touch-up paint (I had the paint code) and they've been very professional.
