NOS 1989 Beretta Radio ? Say What ?

Any GM wiring wizards here?

I have a NOS 1989 Beretta radio that I am going to install into the console of my '65 truck. It was a dealer take out I bought back in 1990.

I am wanting to bench test it. Back when I bought it I purchased a Delco plug for it (0211A8 1#16043490 Gr. 9.656 Connector ASM.) and the guy at the counter gave me a connector ref. sheet showing connections.

The sheet appears correct, but doesn't match what I have found on-line.

Here is how I think it is supposed to be wired:

1- Green, LF Speaker -
2- Pink, LF Speaker +
3- Yellow, RF Speaker –
4- Blue, RF Speaker +

5- Black, Ground
6- Brown, Parking Light
7- Tan, Dimming
8- White, Power Antenna
9- Red, Ignition
10- Orange, Battery

17- White w/ Blue, RR Speaker –
18- Light Blue, RR Speaker +
19- Blue w/ White, LR Speaker –
20- Yellow/Black, LR Speaker +
Look right?

The on-line wiring diagram doesn't jive with the wire colors the plug has, and the data just doesn't look right to me:
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Orange
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Yellow
Car Radio Ground Wire: Black
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Gray
Car Stereo Dimmer Wire: Brown
Car Stereo Antenna Trigger Wire: Pink
Car Stereo Amp Trigger Wire: N/A
Car Stereo Amplifier Location: N/A
Car Audio Front Speakers Size: 4″ x 6″ Speakers
Car Audio Front Speakers Location: Dash
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Tan
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Gray
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Dark Green
Car Audio Rear Speakers Size: 6″ x 9″ Speakers
Car Audio Rear Speakers Location: Rear Deck
Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Brown
Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Light Blue
Any advice will be appreciated. Just don't want to fry anything

Re: NOS 1989 Beretta Radio ? Say What ?

Position is what matters more than color with these radios. The pigtail you got might not have been for the same car, or the online diagram might have been for another vehicle. It appears that your numbered diagram should be right, as the speakers are set for the 4 pin plug for the front, and 4 pin for the rear. As for the main plug, that seems correct, and actually didn't change much through 2002 radios. I used a 2001 Grand prix CD player in my 93 bonneville, which had that same layout for connectors.

Thanks Jimmy. I'll dive into it and see if the old beast still plays tunes.

You got a brother named Pink? (Bet that joke got old many years ago... but I just had to ask)

Thanks again,

John

"6- Brown, Parking Light"

I wonder why that is part of the equation?

My guess is that is to tell it that the lights are on along with dimming. Either that, or it's just not used.

My guess is it probably dims the lights on the radio when you turn on the parking lights. My wife's Jeep does that. (it assumes it is getting darker in the vehicle, since the parking lights are on)

We have a winner!

Also, if its a cassette deck, it should power the light that shows the "docking port" or whatever you want to call it, for the actual cassette which, IIRC, is nto affected by dimming

Re: NOS 1989 Beretta Radio ? Say What ?

Well I bench tested the radio over the weekend and it works. I will be installing this radio in the console of my truck.

I do have one question though:

Since the truck is a '65 it doesn't have an "ACC" position on the ignition switch. Can I simply tie the radio "9- Red, Ignition" & the "10- Orange, Battery" together and feed them from a single fused battery source instead of the ignition? That way I can listen to the radio if the ignitition is turned off.

Only down side to this that I see is I'll just have to make sure I don't leave it on and run down the battery.

Make sense?

Thanks again for all your input. Here is a photo of the radio mocked up in the console:

Yes you can, but like you said, you can easily kill your battery by doing this. You should have some sort of acc. circuit in the fuse panel to wire into though...

There is no ACC position on 1966 and older trucks in their stock form. And if you flip the switch over to ignition without starting the truck it will burn up the points in the dizzy and possibly the coil.

I have thought though about putting a switch in the wire that goes from the ignition to the coil. This would double as a theft deterent.

But I'd rather drain down the battery by being forgetfull than kill the points and possibly burn up the coil.

Re: NOS 1989 Beretta Radio ? Say What ?

i've put a switch single pole double throw beside the radio
I've done this for friends who don't wana leave the keys in the car/truck/with kids what ever reason
up connects to the battery(lighter)
middle is quick off
bottom is with the truck running (normal wire for power)
this setup may work for you,i've done it for years with no problems
this set up is a 99 radio in my 78

Re: NOS 1989 Beretta Radio ? Say What ?

Now that I have the radio tested and mounted I need an extension cable for the antenna.

Can I simply cut it and splice in some coaxial cable of about the same size?

Just wondered if there is some certain capacitance or something related that would be a problem.

Thanks again,

John

Re: NOS 1989 Beretta Radio ? Say What ?

You could probably get an antenna wire out of a car at the junkyard. I know in the bonnevilles they went from the radio, over to the passenger side, and ran under the carpet just under the door to the rear and then to the antenna. depending on the size of the car, the length would be different.

Do not splice the cable...
Either find a longer cable from a donor as suggested...

or use an extension cable...

Typical internet warehouse deal though, $6 part, $10 shipping.

I knew extensions were available. I was just hoping to save a few bucks by splicing it seeing how I have some coaxial cable and some fittings.
