I need some info.Ive needed a cab for my rusted 67 for a while now and Ive located a 69 1 ton.The owner wants to keep the engine from the 69.He is also 150+-miles from me.The tow bill is $400 to get it home.I think Ill take my engine from my truck,put it in the 69 and drive it home.My question is this:
69 has a 307 v8,I have a 292 6cyl w/manual trans.Any problems with this idea
like flywheel difference? Ill have to fab up exhaust too but thats not a problem.Any help will be apprerciated. Thanks. Muley

is your 67 a driver?
Is there anything else you can drag a trailer with?
You won't just 'toss' a motor of another design in there...it'll take hrs and hrs of this and that and cussing and stripped bolts and motor mounts not working properly and I thought this would fit and where did my 9/16ths go, and ^%$&^% I forgot something at home that was needed...
Screw all that.

Longhornman,yes my 67 is a driver,it just doesnt have seatbelts that are useable.The 292 came in 69s also,so where would big problems with the swap be? The owner wants to keep the 307 from the 69.My 292 is running,it just has a 3 sp trans.Are the flywheels not interchangeable?Everything I need i can take from my truck,motormounts,etc.I just cant go $450 plus for a tow bill.The 69 is a driver.I am not 100% sure about the flywheel swap,but that seems to me to be the only issue.Like I said before,any help is appreciated.Muley

Different engine crossmember/motor mount towers,throttle linkage,clutch linkage...to name a few. You will be under pressure to get it done in short time. There's always a chance you'll get hung up with your truck inoperable 150 miles from home. I think hauling is your best bet.

Here's another idea, see if you can give him a deposit on his engine and get a ride/train/bus to the truck and drive it home yourself. Then you can pull the engine at your leisure at home and do the swap and then return it to him.

Otherwise hit up Autozone, get a towbar and tow it home that way. Towbars work great, are super inexpensive, and have worked great for me. Just drive carefully and for $150 you'll have a towbar and a the truck home.

I'm a big fan of tow bars too, but without the weight of the engine, it won't track properly

I think a dolly would cost about the same,if that. At least I don't recall it costing that much

If it has daul reae wheels, then I doubt he'd find a dolly wide enough... that thought had crossed my mind yesterday at work thinking about this thread

I know most 1/2 tons hardly fit on the typical dolly, and don't the DRW trucks have a wider track width up front?

I don't think so. The wheels and spacers are designed to put the tire in pretty much the same track as a single wheel truck. I know 4wds are wider and I've hauled plenty of those. Even with 8" wheels and 10" tires.

hmmm, ok cool.
The OP could call the seller and ask to run a tape from outside of front tire to outside of front tire and check the local dolly guys with that number.

When I was looking at renting a dolly from Uhaul, it was $45 for 24 hours. Ended up borrowing a car hauler and going that route instead.
