How Do You Know When You Need New Brake Pads

Thursday after work I helped a buddy move some plywood from his garage at his cabin to his cabin that he is rehabbing. He has a girly truck and needed my 8-foot bed to haul the 4x8 sheets.

On the way across the lake I noticed my brakes were REALLY bad. I made a note to myself to look at them this weekend when I had a block of time to pull wheels and look things over.

After I loaded up the stuff I suggested I use that weight in the back to help me move some snow that drifted in off his lake road. Again no brakes. (With a plow you don't need much brake - you can just drop the blade)

So fast forward to yesterday after work. I was on good behavior keeping myself presentable so I could take my daughter to the daddy/daughter dance at the middle school. I chose to clean up the cement part of the driveway since it was above 32 for the first time this year. Out in the middle of the driveway I found the picture below.

That is one way to know you need new brake pads.

Yeah,I think they all need to be on the truck to work properly. Glad you found that out and now can save it.

This is a good example of checking things out right away saving a lot of coin because of it. That pad came off the rivets on the outboard side of the LF brake. I stopped using it right away and got new pads in there BEFORE any damage was done to the rotor.

This spring when I get the plow off and things warm up I'll give it a proper front brake job.
