Hib cap painting process

How do you reproduce the paint process on stock hub caps. Other than masking and taping I can't see how they would do it on such a larege scale.

Re: Hib cap painting process

I'm guessing some sort of masking "dies", as they were certainly not done by hand.
I made such a set of masking dies/molds awhile back while restoring a set of later hubcaps.
I started with a straight hubcap, sprayed it with mold release, and used thickened casting resin to achieve the rough "plug". Then carefully shaped and sanded it to exactly cover what should not be painted. It was a bunch of work, but the hubcaps came out totally perfect. No hard tape edges, and even shows ever so slightly off-registered placement typical of factory automated production work. I could paint a hundred more caps now with little effort if I wanted to.

Wow, that's look just like the factory paint. Great job. I'll try something like that. Seem like a lot of work but the results are perfect.

I need to get used to this new laptop and it's keyboard. I keep misspelling and typo things.
