Turbo 400

I have a extra 475 HP 383 and a built turbo 400 with a 2800 high stall sitting in my shop. I also have a spare 1966 chevy long box sitting infront of the shop....So I was thinking yank the old 305 and 3 speed tranny out and bolt it some fun

I know there are so many people who are so much wiser then me ......I have been looking for a how too put a turbo 400 for dummies thread....Don't get me wrong I can make something or hack something , but whats the easy strong way to do this ? I saw a kit someplace but is there a bracket or mount that comes out of a differnt year of truck ? What about driveshafts for the conversion....long one piece?.....Show me the way

CPP makes a kit for under $200 that comes with the tubular engine perches the tubular tranny crossmember and the mounts and hardware you need to put you motor and tranny in you truck. Its what I modified to relocate my engine in my ole ratrod 64 truck. Its a good kit and is affordable.

Your engine mounts will be the same, just need a later model trans mount, any thing out of a 67 to 77 chevy pickup will work just a matter of drilling holes if you have the old rear side trans mounts they will need to be cut off, you`ll have t relocate your e-brake cable/lever. Longer drive shaft is also an option.

I agree with Rich.

Your original V8 motor mounts will work just fine. Then all you need is a transmission mount crossmsmber from a '67-'87 truck. That's what I used in my Suburban. A '66 will already have the easier e-brake cables to work with. You will definitely have to remove the bellhousing crossmember.

There is no reason to spend money on aftermarket parts to do this when the OEM parts willwork just fine. The one thing you might do is install a torque limiting strap on the engine, since those motor mounts can come apart if abused much.

I agree the factory mounts and crossmember work great for your average sbc. A 475 hp 383 isn't your avg small block. I would at least use upgraded mounts if not solid mounts and as far as I know no one makes those for the original engine perches, altho I could be mistaken. That's why I suggested the CPP setup. That and if original parts sell for the crazy prices around ya'll as they do here in the Houston area, it's more cost effective to go with aftermarket.

If motor mount failure is a concern with the original motor mounts, I would convert to the '73 and up motor mounts. That's what I typically use, but most here don't seen to like them for some reason.
