10th Birthday Gift, Father/Son Project Truck

So I gave my 10 year old Son a project truck for his 10th birthday. Its a 1985 Chevy 1500 4x4, Burb front clip, newer 350 crate, 700R4, Air, Tilt, Cruise, and soon to have 91 Burb power doors with power mirrors. I told him that after we do the body work, He can pick a color. He said "How bout black!?!"
Next on the to do list is, bolting the "new" box down, install bumpers, hitch, carpet, gauge bezel, rad, cab corners, and get rid of the full time 4wd transfer case in exchange for the transfer case I pulled out of an 89 burb I parted out.
So that should keep us busy for a while!

Re: 10th Birthday Gift, Father/Son Project Truck

I had to save for my own car and bought a 74 Dodge Dart with my own money when I was 14. The difference being that my Dad didn't have an interest in cars. I'm not only hoping for a bonding opportunity, but also a chance to teach him some basics that will come in handy down the road, in addition to seeing the benefits of some hard work..

Nice! That's how I ended up with my truck, it's been in the family since 1981 and I have no plans of ever selling it!

Re: 10th Birthday Gift, Father/Son Project Truck

I did an engine build with my oldest when he was a senior in high school. Engine is still running strong, as is the truck it's in. This kid is 3/4 of the way through an electrical engineering degree and still works on this truck when it needs it.
Great project, the two of you will always remember the time you spend on it.

And putting his own blood sweat and tears into the truck to get it up and running by the time he's LEGALLY able to drive will make him respect it even more than just handing him the keys to a new car and saying "THERE YA GO, IT'S ALL YOURS"

I totally agree though I am a little bias because I don't really care for newer cars

That's VERY cool! It's hard to find kids interested in doing anything that requires getting dirty these days.

Yup. I told him that when the weather is cold, he can play his video games, but when it's nice out, it'll be tool time!

A kid my mom used to baby sit back in the 70's, Named John Paul Fortin, on his 8th birthday his stepfather, a fireman at the time drug home an old porche 911 targa that had a milk crate for a seat, No interior and no engine/transaxle. He told John if he wanted to get his drivers lisence when he was 16 to have that car road worthy by then.
8 years later all he needed done was a paint job. That kid workd his back side off earning money to fix that car up. His stepdad also did the same thing for his sister with a small cessna 180 air plane.
