Posi Rear End????

first of all.... my truck spins both tires when i do a burnout. i have been reading that a way to tell if your rear end has posi is to jack up the rear and spin a wheel. if the opposite wheel spins the same way.... then its a posi rear end. if the opposite wheel spins the opposite direction then it is NOT posi traction. so out of curiosity i jacked up the rear and spun the wheel.... the opposite wheel spun the opposite way.... so that would indicate NO posi right??? but both wheels spin while burning out and clearly leaves two tire marks and gets a little sideways.... i am confused now.

also what was the stock rear end on a 62' Chevy??? mine has 10 bolts and i dont know what gears.... thanks guys!

Re: Posi Rear End????

Posi, if the opposite rear wheel spins in the same direction. A open diff. will have the opposite tire spin in the other direction and a limited slip will some times leave the other wheel standing still and slowly start turning in the same direction.

Re: Posi Rear End????

How long have you had the truck?
Is this a new condition, or has it always spun both tires? If its always spun both tires, you have a posi, don't worry.
If it's a new thing, just started leaving "scratch" with both tires, you can have an open diff that is failing and about to go boom.

If it's a new truck to you, you probably need to change the gear oil anyway, so pop the diff cover and have a look.

Thumbs up Re: Posi Rear End????

Jack up the rear end. Out of park or gear. Turn a rear wheel. If they turn in the same direction its posi. If they turn in the oppisite direction its non posi.

Re: Posi Rear End????

I've had open diffs spin both tires before. I don't know how to explain it, but it can happen.

The rear end in your truck is a GM55T which was used from 1955 thru 1962. The most common gears in those rear ends is 3.90's

I'm pretty sure that's what I have in my 65 on a 62 frame with torsion bars.
It will leave two tracks when I stomp it.

Re: Posi Rear End????

kinda had this same issue with my 65... in the winter it acts like a posi... both spin, and it starts corkscrewing around like a posi will do... jacked it up turn one tire, the other turns the other way... jacked it up the other day with one tire still on the ground, and out of gear, and the rear is locked like a posi.... ???? gotta scratch around on the diff and find the code, unfortunatley there was no build sheet..

Re: Posi Rear End????

an old dirt track trick "back in the day" was to open up the bore on the spiders to allow them to twist under heavy load, thereby locking up like a posi. That could be what is happening to yours.. it way have worn in and now binds just enough to lock it up properly.
