spark plug extenders/extensions?

I was doing a tune up on my truck over the weekend (first one since I bought it) and for some reason the PO had these screw on extenders on the first 2 spark plugs on the drivers side of my truck. Neither my father or I have ever seen anything of this nature. They just scre2ed on to the end of the spark plug, had a flat end w/ a small hole in it and made the plug about a 1/2 inch longer. Does anybody know what these are for?

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

I was stupid and they got thrown out w the trash this morning. And no, our facility is 15 miles east of Athens. I assure you, we are far superior to that in Canton. Check out my website, we have people come down from your area every weekend. I'll even give a discount to a fellow board member.

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

Those are called anti-foulers.

They are an old parts store gimmick that's intended for engines with worn rings to keep the plug from getting coated with oil. Strictly a stop gap measure similar to that "stop leak in a bottle" stuff to get someone by until they can fix the real problem.

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

We have used them for years on our old farm tractors. They are a stop gap thing, but since our old tractors are used more as hobby tractors now they work ok.

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

Alright, thanks. I think I need them back bc my truck is backfiring some and I'm not gonna invest the money to really fix up this 307 when I have a free 350 or big block to choose to rebuild. So hopefully this will be the temporary fix I need until then

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

I had to put them on my '67 Impala Convertible because a couple of cylinders were "pumpin' oil", as we termed it. Anyway, you gotta be careful because they will also let the engine run-on, or diesel, when you shut it off.

They're a stop-gap item, usually used because it needs rebuilt.

But, if yours is back-firing, it could be a fuel issue...and probably is. If you have a Q-Jet, one very common problem is that the fuel leaks past the plugs in the base of the throttle body (where the floats go) and into the rear part of the intake system. Fuel will puddle in the base of the intake and flood the engine, and it will also wash past the rings and dilute the oil in the crankcase. Heck, it might even be enough to make you think it isn't even using oil, when in fact it is taking the place of the oil....and not lubricating. Probably hear the mains/rods rattling at times, and/or your oil pressure drops....especially as it warms up. If the timing is not right, the fuel in the intake, combined with a hot enough combustion chamber, will either run-on or backfire.

Mine did just that, until I replaced the Edelbrock 1305 with a new Q-Jet. The old one ran rich, adding to the problem. The new Edelbrock Q-Jet (no longer sold) was so lean, it heated up the combustion process and I had to add a heat shield to the starter solenoid to get it to start when it was hot.

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

Those will also cause a buildup of carbon around the end of them inside the head. My brother had them on his truck, and when we pulled the heads there was carbon built up all around the end of the non foulers. But it did make it run for quite a while

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

They make great bungs for Oxygen sensors if you add fuel injection. Cut them in half and weld them on. Much less expensive than the bungs you buy for that purpose.

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

You can also use them instead of the black box to get around post catalyst O2 sensors. I think most GM folks just program them out now though. We used them on an WRX sti to form a catalyst area to keep the post sensors from toggling like the pre sensors are suposed to, when eliminating the converter. Works great!

Re: spark plug extenders/extensions?

Well I did have a major flood through my engine a few days ago. I changed the plugs, and then changed my oil twice in an attempt to get all of the gas out of the block. That could be causing some of the backfires as well. I'm gonna pick some of these things up and try them and narrow down the cause
