NOS tailgate

I've got a shot at a nos tailgate! What is the best way to tell a nos one from a reproduction? Thanks in advance for any help

Re: NOS tailgate

It should have a GM sticker with part number on it.

Re: NOS tailgate

Look for spot welds for a GM NOS. It's a dead giveaway. Aftermarket does not have the spot welds like GM did. Trevor

Put it on the scales and it will weigh MUCH less than an original if it is aftermarket junk. I bought an aftermarket tailgate 10 years ago from a well known supplier and knew I had junk when I stepped up on it with my Reebocks and my 170 Lbs. put a nice kink in it 5 years and lots of rust holes later it went back to scrap.

Re: NOS tailgate

The guy bought it from Weber Chevrolet 10 years ago and never used it. It has 2 small dings in it but rust free and It just so happen I put a down payment on a 1972 GMC big block short bed today. Here are a couple of pics

I do agree some of the repro are junk and easily bend...however I had a keyparts/Tri-plus gate that weighed Exactly the same as my NOS gate. The only difference in those was the welds on the side of the gate were nicer on the repro than the original. And the top edge roll was SLIGHTLY different.
