my 84 swb by wcdfab

Hey guys. I lurked the forum for about a year getting ideas for my truck. Now thats its done I figured I would share the build. All the fab work was done by my friends shop.

here is the truck done

Here is what it looked like when I got it from Dino.

Tons of fab work has been done to the truck. My favorite part of the truck is the rear end. Every piece was hand made by Willy(my friend with shop) from the c-notch to the four link. He also pancaked both fuel tanks 3 inches and made new mounting straps so they could remain with the truck keeping both my fuel doors functional. The 7 gallon air tank was added to the spare tire location and a custom mounting plate was made for the air manifold so it could be mounted inside the frame but still be easily accessed. He also made a really slick transmission crossmember that has a rounded edged to keep it smooth incase it catches something in the road.

notch

bed cut out

bed being filled in

bracing for rear bag mounts

fuel tanks, 4 link, supports and manifold.

clearance when frame is on ground.

Re: my 84 swb by wcdfab

So, after the rear was complete the front was next!! I love how this came out as I have not seen another like it. Instead of getting a crossmember or z'ing the frame, Willy opted to rebuild the existing crossmember.

The original crossmember was narrowed 2 inches. The upper control arm mounts were removed and the large holes you see in the picture were then plated. Very strong. then the whole crossmember was moved forward 1 inch and raised 3 inches and welded to the frame. To match the 2 inches narrowed for the upper arms, custom mounting plates were made to connect the arms directly to the frame. The frame was also boxed in this area to keep it strong.

When I bought the truck from Dino the front end had drop spindles and tubular control arms already (score!!) So Willy was able to fab a shock tower that ran through the center on the arms leaving me with fullsize shocks! It rides so smooth.

Also a mustang rack was added and the drop spindles had to be modified to accept it at such a low stance. You can also see the bag plates he made in the last picture. They look really good with the bags mounted.
So with the crossmember done, the engine was moved forward 2 inches and raised 1 inch to clear the firewall and keep a nice gap between the crossmember and oil pan. That also helped raise the transmission pan high enough to be off the ground for the stock floor body drop. only one small tunnel was needed under the bench seat for the drive shaft.

The driveshaft did have to be stretched 2 inches though.
So now with the front done, an inch and a half was taken off the bottom of the frame, and the frame was boxed to give it the "body dropped" look.

I love my new truck and I am so happy with how it turned out. I hope you guys enjoy!

Re: my 84 swb by wcdfab

Lucky for me in Phoenix all the roads are pretty smooth and I can get away with driving that low quite a bit. Its got a bit of negative camber that low though so I only drive like that in traffic when it's going slow.

No photos of the tank being pancaked, but he took 3 inches horizontally from the tank. After doing that only one corner doesn't line up so he took a wedge out of the corner about 3 inchs long and 1/2 inch wide to match everything up. The sending unit was also shortened to match the pancake.
