starter issue 1963 c10

i rewired the truck with a ez kit. everything works great and it started once. I tried to start it again and all it did was "crank crank crank CLANK" and after that the starter stoped and the fan bounced back as if it hit something. I had the starter tested and it failed. Installed new starter and same issue. What am i doing wrong? here is the diagram that i used.
Also has newer 350 with hei ignition

How long have you been running that motor? Did you run the motor on the old wire harness?

do you have grounds.grounds ,grounds ,grounds. and not just the battery.

grounded great body to frame to modor to bed. Truck ran and drove a week ago before the harness.

are you running a >80 amp alternator? (i.e. and did you connnect that wire to from the alternator to the starter?). THAT is something I've never, ever heard of. Then again, I've probably never had an alternator that put out >80 amps either. Does that bottom depiction connection of alt to starter seem correct to the rest of you? I'll be honest I just don't know, but that seems odd to me. Almost sounds like you're blowing the solenoid each time you try to start. Could that be because the alt is applying 14+ volts to it? Might double check to make sure that if you did the alt-strtr connection that you are truly connected to the correct terminal on the starter. Picture looks pretty clear that it is supposed to be connected to the same terminal that the + batt cable is connected to.

Are you running the pink wire to the HEI and is your timing set, it sounds like a timing issue...

timing is good, batterys is good and ive got a new starter again. It acts like the battery is dead now and is not blowing starters anymore. I left the alternator disconnected for now to see if thats the problem. The truck had a push busson start to bypass the ign sw., could this all be due to a bad switch?

Ground the battery to the engine with the big cable.
Ground the battery to the body with a smaller cable.

everythings grounded i even added jumpercable in with the mix for more grounds. i tried the push button start and it worked perfect once and then it all came back to crap again.

Can you bypass the starter button? Maybe it has a full charge and stays on to the starter once engaged and over heats it.

Do you have the exciter wire in the circuit to the alt? Red from alt to battery?
purple wire to the starter?
Red to the starter?

Which setup are you running? Internal regulator? external?

What do you mean by the fan hit something? the cooling fan?

i do have exciter wire to alt, no wire to battery, i used the bypass wire and went to the starter.

i do have red and purple to starter.

internal reg
fan did not litterlay hit something but it stops fast like it did. do i need to shim my starter?
