tach problems

ok I was messing in the 71 today since its about 75 degrees out. and I was trying to hook up the factory tach in the dash. if I tap the guage the needle bounces so Im pretty sure it works. the problem is the motor doesnt move it. theres two wires on the back of the dash panel. one is running to the tach plug on the HEI cap. the other is running to the fuse block. is this right and any ideas as to why its not working if it is? any help would be appreciated
thanks,
Dan

Cool TACH

Make sure the tach is hooked to the tach side of the dist. cap. It's marked and make sure you have the metal tab that goes in the cap in place, I have seen these missing before. Yes the wires should be as you said.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

yeah its hooked on right on the dist. the only thing I can think of is the wires may be bad since its hooked up right. is there a right and wrong plug to hook them to on the tach?

Make sure the tach is well grounded...To test my tach while it was out of the truck, I wired the body of the tach to a good ground and that made the difference.

I didnt think about that it should be grounded though its bolted in tight and the dash is real solid actually.

Did you try switching the wires on the back of the tach?

And...I am sure you are correct...if the tach is installed in the dash you should be good for ground.

ok after a long lengthy descision ( mainly unplugging things and plugging them back in so many times my hand hurts from hitting stuff up under the dash) and with a lot of choice words. Ive come to the desicion of I dont think it works. perhaps I'll just find another somewhere. whats the cheapest place for replacement clusters? and can I buy just one of the parts of do I have to buy them all?

I am sure you buy just the tach if that is all that you need. I think I saw a tach for sale on the parts board for $50.
