You might say this truck got smoked...

I was looking at the aftermath of the Mt. St. Helens eruption when I spotted this truck. What a way to go. This was May 1980... Is this a 67-72?

That was my exact thought when I saw it,too. Very restorable,to say the least. Looks like a K/20 with a winch. Maybe it has an am/fm,No-Spin,tilt...I can see myself backpacking and coming up upon that, trying to get the parts off with my Swiss Army knife.

I think I remember seeing that pic originally in a National Geographic when I was a kid.

I remember when I was growing up my dad was parking our camper next to the shop and he was useing the 69 1-ton, He backed it in and shut it off, left it in gear (or so he said lol), got out and unhooked the trailer. The truck promtly took off down the hill! It ended up parking itself in the neighbors 1 car garage sideways. It went in one side and almost out the other side if it wasn't far the wheel borrow getting jamed up under the front pass wheel.

About a week later after the ins agent all was done they were gonna call a wrecker to drag it out of the garage. My dad got in it and started it up and backed it out. All that the truck needed was a new battery cable (the fire dept cut it), a new winshield (it got a small crack) and a little paintwork (got a amsll scratch on the hood. thats all! The garage needed to be torn down and rebuilt! The ins agent joked that he shoud have insured it as a tank LOL!
All we fixed on it was the cable and drove it for about another 10-15 years! that was when i fell in love with these trucks they are tough as nails

Re: You might say this truck got smoked...

To say smoked might be an understatement.. Here's a pic of how hot it really got (now remember this truck was 12 miles from the blast zone) Unfortunately two people also perished in that truck.

I remember that day quite well.. Watched it blow.. then the next day went over to a private airfield, put duct tape over the numbers on a buddies Bellanca Viking (single engine airplane) and proceeded to take a few low passes right over the blast zone (Yes were were young and DUMB). the real bad part was I forget to bring good batteries for my camera!! So no pics of that day.

Yeh, looks like the footprints only go 20 or 30 feet. And no tire tracks from there.
