So I have an original 72 LWB that I am going to transfer to a 68 Short chassis I bought. What are your opinions on "cutting out' and welding in the original matching frame numbers from the 72 to the 68 if I scrap the 72 frame afterwards. Or should I just grind out the numbers on the 68 frame since not all frames came with numbers?

Secondly, the 72 is an original 402 BB are there any Head modifications I can do without swapping pistons to increase the HP since in 72 the 402 is only rated at 240hp? Thanks for any suggestions.

u can gasket match ur heads pretty easy

Your frame question. Are you expecting someone to inspect the frame numbers to see if they match your cab Vin? In our state unless there is a question about Vin #'s no one looks for the frame / Cab Vin plate to match. And since these trucks are of an older age very few even know they are on the frame. So in our case that isn't a big concern. But if your expecting some difficulty with your DMV in your state it would be smarter to contact your DMV for what they recommended not what someone on this site would advise.

Sammy...thanks for the input. It is really more of a matching thing than a DMV thing. I know I couldn't and wouldn't try to pass it off as an original swb because the model number on the spid says it was born a longbed, but it would keep it all matching just as if I cut down the original frame.

Guess you could cut the vin out of the frame and stick it in the glove box. Noi sure what you would gain though. Overall condition of vehicle trumps matching numbers in my book.

my opinion is: if your going to do a complete restoration and it will be worth quite a bit of money, I would definitely want the frame and the body to match. I dont know for sure, but Iv heard that some auction houses, (Mecum, Barret Jackson and maybe others) do a complete vin check and if one doesn't match they wont sell it. plus if you have the ability to do it fairly easy, you should it may save you a potential headache later.

I think I am leaning toward cutting out the numbers and welding them into the 68 frame. Since it won't be structural it shouldn't be difficult and I just think its one of those things that will bug the crap out of me. I feel justified in doing it since I have the original frame now.
