1966 sbbw

Okay this is a bit of cheating and a bit of a story....and a lesson in geography.

It starts out with me at work oneday and happened upon this truck on craiglist and had to have it. Well I live near vancouver b.c and was working in northern Alberta and the truck, well it was in Madera California. So after a search on mapquest I called the guy and bought the truck and made plans to pick it up. Fly back to B.C at midnight, get up in the morning hook up the trailer and head south....a day to get there and the coils had been cut so low that I couldn't get it on my tilt trailer with out building a ramp to my ramp just to get it onto the trailer. a day back....paper work for customs both sides and a vechile inspection and whamo I have a truck. What I ended up with was a SBBW fleetside truck that had power steering and disc brakes and was in primer. Turns out as many of our stories do it wasn't quite the gem I thought it was. For the record it's not okay to fill the holes from hooks and trim in the box and body by using duct tape and filler. It does how ever scare the crap out of you when you hit the duct tape with a disc sander. All and all it worked out ...as you will see this wasn't my first rodeo and it won't be my last. So thats the start...and this first picture is it on my truck heading back home ( it is however very cool to be in 2 feet of snow and 24 hours later be passing palm trees with a truck on your trailer )

First I thought....hey I will drive it around like that have some fun, it's kind of like a ratrod. See i already had a 1966 long box ( truck 1 ) I had been driving around and it had been sitting for awhile before i got to it. Then i thought I will keep the1966 long box (truck 1 )as a kind of farm/ratrod truck and do the SBBW truck (truck 2 )....sooooo apart comes the shortbox truck I was going to drive

Out come the windows......rip out the seats......start to sand the whole inside down.....ugh. It all looks so easy and fast when I watch you guy's do it

Then might as well take the box off and do that now too.....This is the point I went to a buddies place so I could use his hoist. It's about now that i decided not to use and repair the fenders but to replace them with new ones.

It's spread from one side of the shop to the other side of the shop now...Still have to take that fender off and put the new one on

My buddy comes up with a idea for color....because frankly I have no idea what to paint this thing. So we color match the color on his bike....

My buddy has the coolest box rack I have seen and as soon as i get a chance I will take some pictures of it. It's a small boat trailer that he built a pad on for the box to sit on....then up front he built a handle with two tires on it that has a hitch on it...So when you want to move it is really easy and one person can do it.

I ripped out the plywood out of the box and made my own oak kit....I found a site that gave me all of the sizes of the boards and how to run the grooves. Fired up my planner and ran through my oak till i had the right thickness for the boards...Then cut them all to the right widths and used a dado blade to cut the grooves. Two coats of light oak and then 3 coats of exterior varathane and it was all ready to go . The plan was to have it all cured and ready so when the box was painted and still off the truck I could put the box bottom in before it got remounted.

The box got painted....seemed to take forever

Then it was oak time.....

Takes a bit of time to put this in to make it fit nice.....

Man i love the way that turned out.....

Just got the cab painted and wow ....

The paint on the cab atlast......when i said i was cheating this is where the cheating ends....Everything else you have seen was done in about the last 6 weeks and that gets us to these pictures which are so fresh you can still smell the paint

The stripe caused us some issues trying to decide where to run it to and how to end it. So we ran it right across the door jamb and it turned out killer.....

Awsome work. I might be a little biased about the color though
I've been debating on what to do with the white top on mine. I like the way you split yours.

It wasn't a easy choice for me....I just wanted to go with the white roof ...but i think it worked out great with the split. But you pretty much have to carry the stripe right through the door jamb but i think after i get the weather stripping in it will look like great detail. Atleast thats the plan .... I used a pearl white and it looks great with the blue I really like it.

Loaded it up and headed it the other shop so we could do the brakes and get it ready to roll....

I should have taken pictures of the blocks of wood that we stuffed in by the springs to raise it enough to get it onto the trailer.....

Spent the big bucks on getting a new seat.......

Well we got the box on before it went back to the shop......I like the way it's looking now

We got the paint on the floor ....thought it would be a great idea before running the new wiring kit...nice clean floor to start with

Now......it's starting to look like a truck now....

So they did a Seattle Tool shoot in my buddies shop....so they used the truck in it. They said it would be on you tube and some posters....I thought it was kind of cool that in some shots both of the trucks would be in them....I guess we will see
