lug nut frozen to wheel stud

I was trying to take my LF wheel off, and the last lug nut is spinning, stud and all. I assume I have to cut the stud off somehow, right? I don't have a torch, so a hacksaw might be my only option. Any suggestions? Once I get it off, do ya'll think replacing the stud will take care of it?

I think a new stud and you'll be good to go. The little splines that hold it in place likely gave up the ghost. Is it drum or disc?

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

Try using a cold chisle and splitting the nut in half.

if you can get a cut off wheel in there that might work too.. No matter how you look at its not a fun job, but with alitte effort it will get done..

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

if the rim and tire are still on there the easy way is to take hold of the tire and pull forcefully to snap the stud// we used to do that when we had a wheel lock on and no key

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

Don't have a cut off wheel, but might get one now. I do have a compressor, and the lug nut is not tight to the wheel, so I think there is room to get a cutoff wheel behind the lug nut. It has drums, btw.

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

You could pull the bearing assembly and take off the drum and hub. It might be easier to get at it from the backside.

thats how I would do it, remove the hub/drum assembly, and cut the head of the stud.

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

You could drill the center out of the stud to weaken it and then break it off. It may be tricky as you will likely have to hold the nut with a plier to keep it all from spinning, but it might work. You will probably need to drill most of the center out.

That was my thought too. All of the others are good suggestions too.

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

I think the pull it and grind the head off is the better way.Drilling it might cause more damage to the hole the stud needs to seat into.

Dremel tool works good in tight places as well. If a nut splitter will fit, that might be an option.

Re: lug nut frozen to wheel stud

Thanks guys, bought a cut off wheel and got it off. Now I need to take the drum off tomorrow and replace the stud. Dumb question, should the drum just come off, or does the "hat" under the spindle nut need to come off to remove the drum?

Reminds me of the time I had to do the same on a Honda too, the guy would tighten his lug nuts by taking a lug wrench and jumping on it to make sure it was tight.

If you can get to the axle nut then taking the assembly off and drilling out the back would be the easiest.
