454ss

i would like your guys opinion on the 1990 454SS. i spotted one for sale with 167K on it, a shift kit on the 700R4,Edelbrock headers, Dynatech cat and flowmasters. they are asking $4100. what should i look for? any pros and cons besides the poor fuel mileage and possible increased insurance rate. thanks

Re: 454ss

Hmmm...look over the trans and stuff...only because if it is a true 90ss...it shouldn't have a 700r4....but that's a good price...I never see em under 6k here...

1990 454ss trucks should have a TH400 tranny, not a 700R4.

Re: 454ss

ok next question is what kind of power does the 454 typically put out? and if this truck is in good condition would it be worth the time and trouble to get it? or should i look for something else. since it is a limited production model, would it be worth it to get it and restore it?

1990 Chevy SS454 pick up. Has the original 454 w/167K miles. Runs great and passes e-check. It has a Kenwood CD, pwr windows, pwr locks, cruise, intermittent wipers, tilt, A/C, 700r4 overdrive trans with shift kit, 3.73 posi, tach, buckets w/console, new radiator, brakes and front wheel bearings, nearly new 275/60/15 tires, tinted windows, Edelbrock headers w/ Dynatech cat converter and Flowmaster muffler, tonneau cover and rear roll pan. It has bubbles over the bed wheel wells. It's an extremely dependable truck. Only 13,000 were built in 1990. Asking $4100.00 but negotiable.

Re: 454ss

Didn't they come with 4.11's from factory? That means they changed trans and rearend. Wonder if it is actually a 454ss? Lots of potential to go fast, but the 700r4 won't take a big block pounding for very long.

Re: 454ss

"Go fast" and "454SS pickup" really doesn't go in the same sentence. Only rated at 230hp is pretty anemic for a 454. They were pretty choked down from the factory.

Re: 454ss

thanks guys. i saw it on CL and it does look to be in decent shape. i'm not gonna waste my time with this one and keep looking for something else. besides the poor fuel mileage, increased insurance rates and parts seem to have quite a markup just because its for a 454

Re: 454ss

wow, only 230 hp for a 454. I would think it should be more in the hi 300's. I guess I need to be careful too when looking for used motors. I never would have guessed, Mike

Actually the 90 came with a 400 and 3:73's. The next year they did the 700r4 and 4:11's. Which killed any mpg's the overdrive could have made...

1990 Brochure:

"Announcing our all-new 454SS model (available Nov. 89). It's a one-of-a-kind C1500 Regular-Cab Short-Box (6 1/2-ft.) with the largest V8 in a regular production half-ton ickup today: a 7.4 Liter (454Cu. In.) gas V8 with 230 net HP at 3600RPM, 385 lb-ft of net torque at 1600 RPM, and a 3-speed automatic transmission. Other performance hardware includes a Performance Handling Package, locking rear differential with 3.73 axle ratio and Bilstein gas shocks."

There's more verbage, but my fingers are tired.

Re: 454ss

I think your making a good call to leave it. a 454ss is a nice truck. but i have my doubts this really is one. 200 somthing horsepower? what!? thats not even a 454 i don't think.

Re: 454ss

The 454's since the mid 70's were so choked down... it was rediculous. Most barely netting around 250 hp. The still made torque... but not to their full potential.

Sorry, no 700's were ever used on the 454SS.

In '91, they got the mother of all trannies, the 4L80E.

This, that 90 would not have a 700r4, it would be a TH400, after that it was replaced with the overdrive 4l80. Although someone could have swapped a 700r4 in place of the TH400 to gain overdrive, although unless it was built seriously, it would be taking a step backwards in strength, a simple "shift kit" would not make up this difference.
