red locking hubs

I'm restoring a 69 GMC 4x4 . The front locking hubs need to be replaced eventually . The hubs are red on my 69 and are blue on my 72 . Does anyone know why GM used these different colored hubs , and does anyone have any red hubs in good shape ?
Thanx !

good luck

Which are you refering to? You can still buy new ones from GM but they will be yellow. Do you have the half ton or 3/4 ton spicers. Blue ones are hard to find and i have never seen an NOS pair of red centers for the 1/2 ton style.

I think the red ones are used by ford, gm used the blue and then went to the yellow.

my 1969 GMC K2500 has locking hubs on the glovebox option sheet and they aren't colored. they appear to be just grease-covered metal to me. Is this because it is a 3/4 ton?

red lockouts

My divine 69 has red lockouts & the 71 has blue. The 72 is converted to warns, but I think they were blue also. All are 3/4 tons........Zoomy

1969 GMC, sounds like you have the same spicer hubs as I do on my '68 K20. I don't know when they went to a larger plastic knob, but I know it was changed by '72.

Yeah, my front hubs are monsters, they're bigger than the rear hubs, they don't look like the classic Warn design, the dial doesn't have the 2 kidney shaped depressions, its just a straight line that you turn, no plastic anywhere.

The Red, Yellow and Blue knobs on the 3/4 ton spicer hubs will all interchange. Blue is what was on our trucks, Yellow was on later 73 & up chevy and red was on the fords. You can still get the knobs from spicer but you will most likely get a red one. Chrome rings are also still available from spicer if you want to spruce them up. Gaskets are available from GM. I haven't been able to find much else available for them.

What Zoomy said is correct from my observations. At some point by or during 69 for 3/4 tons they went to red plastci dials that say "Spicer" on them like the blue 71/72 style. They used red in 70 too. 67/68 maybe some 69's used the metal ones like 1969 GMC has.

I recently ran across a guy with a basement full of junk. Here are a few of what I got. More of the same in some other boxes. Never know when I might need spares and I can't tell you the price. Let's just say, "DEAL."

I was just thinkin about this, could the different hubs correlate to open/closed knuckle Dana 44's? My GMC has closed knuckles and big hubs. I think 69 was the year they started using open knuckle 44's, and possibly when they switched to the Warn-style hubs. I guess my closed knuckle was just a leftover they had to get rid of, kinda like my married Rockwell t-case.

The GM parts books make several references to different part numbers related to the red hubs. If you like, I can get a copy of the pages Monday and scan them for you.
