GM Fuel Injection conversion

Guys,

I have a 92 GM truck that I am planing on using fro parts. I am wanting to use the factory Throttle Body Injection, 700R4 and the brake booster and Master Cylinder.

About the Fuel Injection.....
I just had a 383 4bolt engine built with vortec heads and a new Edelbrock Carb (600CFM), it is dynoed at 400hp and 465ft/lbs.
-Will i see any performance increase if i went to the FI?
-Can the factory computer be used as a stand alone unit for this application?
-Is this swap worth the trouble?

Thank in advance for your wealth of knowledge.

W

Re: GM Fuel Injection conversion

92 is TBI.
You will see better starting and driveability with FI versus carb.
You will see less maximum performance (top end) with FI.
Dropping TBI on Vortec heads is not a direct bolt on. You can mate it to the carb intake with an adaptor but each adaptor degrades performance.
With what you have I'd leave it alone.

Re: GM Fuel Injection conversion

Setting up a TBI for a 383 will likely be fairly involved. I'm pretty sure you will need a throttle body from a 454. Plus you will need a custom chip burned for the computer. Depending on the cam that is in the 383, getting a chip that is going to be correct will likely require some data logging. The engine harness will need to be reworked for your application, or an aftermarket harness will be needed.

Unless you're up for the challenge and a learning curve, I would stick with the carb.

Re: GM Fuel Injection conversion

Its an absolute waste of time and money to try and use tbi on a performance engine. They dont flow enough air or fuel. Its extremely expensive to make it work and you wont see any performance improvement
