1973 & Up Exhaust Options Wanted
Need any exhaust experts to weigh in on choices for box body exhaust. Searched the site and found a few ideas but mostly for the earlier trucks. I have headman headers on a lowered swb 1977 c10 with flow masters, and a mild built 350 (325ish hp). I need to replace the pipe and am trying to decide where in the system the mufflers should be. Weather they should be toward the front of the truck or closer to the exits, or if makes a difference at all? Also weather I should have a cross pipe installed between the two? And lastly and most importantly, where to exit the tips. Leaning toward running them out at an angle in front of the rear wheels (love the stereo side pipe sound). May consider dumping them after the axle at a slight angle. Also saw a neat but very expensive thread on using boat/marine tips through the bed side (can't afford) Pictures of exit ideas would be appreciated.

Very similar. They were bolting on the stainless steel boat exhaust tips that you see coming out the rear sides of performance boats.
Motornut. Did you do this on both sides of the truck? Any down sides to doing it?

Obvious downsides would be that your cutting a hole into the bed and you will always will have to run your exhaust through it or it will look wierd....

My truck is only about 4" lower than factory in the rear so I don't think clearance will be an issue. Hopefully gas tanks won't cause a problem if I do the turn outs in front of the rear wheels. I have dual tanks on a SWB.

I had flowmasters and a crossover on my old 81 lwb. The pipes dumped over the axle angled behind the wheels. Here is my buddies truck. The exhaust exits the same as my old truck.

Its simple and sounds good. 3'" pipe. Only draw back is how loud it is in the cab. |

I remember reading something in one of the papers that came with a flowmaster some time ago recomending a minumum legth of pipe after the muffler, something like 12 inches I think. Even having some short turndowns makes a huge difference in cab noise due to how the sound get reflected and resonated uder the vehicle.

I like the dual straight way. X pipe from headers a short glasspack or muffler on each pipe and exit at a 45 behind the axle. This method has a great sound.

When PO installed fresh motor and new headers it change the l/h bank, setting it back about and 1.5-2", so he unhooked the hangers on that bank and just wired it up temporarily. All the pipes are pretty rusty. So I thought I'd start from scratch using the new headers and mufflers. I just don't care for the look or sound of pipes coming straight out the back close together. No stereo!! But also not looking for the sheet metal droan some have.

Thanks, and the only way i know to get the sound from resonating back up in to the cab is to get the exhaust to come out of the side before the tire, or behind the truck. I had some 2.5 inch exhaust pipe laying around so a made some tailpipes to go up and over the axle and come out just behind the tires out of the side. But since i reduced the pipe size. truck didn't make it 100 ft. out of my drive way before i turned around and cut that back off.. sounded terrible!! That's why the dumps look like crap right now. But I can deal with the exhaust noise in the cab. its sounds good i think. The video does it no justice. Camera just doesn't pick up the sound.

i got it done at a local shop they gave me headers two. only down fall is its loud hahah but i like it loud so i dont mind. the mufflers are not very big. all post more pics of the headers and mufflers as soon as i can.

def keep the mufflers behind the cab! ....headers, 3" pipe, crossover and flowmasters dumped in front of the axle. exit out of the side looks good if its done right! and 90% of the time it isn't. I think that you shouldn't be able to see any part of the exhaust hanging below the truck at all.

I agree other than the tips themselves. My headman headers are pretty low though. Front has been dropped at least two, maybe three inches by PO and I worry about dropping it any lower with our Montana roads or they may start making contact.

Jbravo383 that sounds killer. My exhaust dumps before the axle and it sounds good. I got flowtech mufflers and 2.5 inch pipes. Not too loud but good enough for now.

I just had mine done last thursday on my 85 GMC Sierra short bed. I have a 355 vortec engine with headers. I wanted it quiet so I went with two inch pipe into a 2 1/2 inch x pipe, back into two inch pipe into flowmasters straight out the back. It's nice and quiet like I wanted with little noise inside. I put the mufflers as far back as I could. Even standind at the back it's not loud. Exactly what I wanted..
