the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
Hi Folks,
Great boards, have been so handy already! I bought this what I consider to be gorgeous truck in fall 2009 because i wanted to learn more about mechanics but haven't had the time or money to really get it 'done'. It's turned out to be a great project for me because alot of the expensive accessories (rubber, paint, rollbars, carb, headers, rhino lining etc) were already bought and installed so i could just tinker on the 'minor stuff' that needed to be done. yeah right. Anyways, as you can imagine there was more to meets the eye on the to do list. I dont even know if this is a build log or what but I want to list what i've done already and what i'm going to do w/ some pics if for nothing else for me to reference back to down the road and show friends. Spring 2010 Head Gaskets / Intake Gasket Flex Plate and Bell housing Rebuilt TH400 tranny New U-joints New output shaft housing and something i can remember that lived in there Feb 2011 Starter - came with one year roadside assistance woop! Drivers side gas tank Spedometer cable Blower Motor and squirrel cage Battery 1050A, 875 CCA Windshield washer pump Tightened loose bolts in tilt steering column that were causing play in wheel Fixed dome / courtesy light wiring, replaced door jambs wired in new deck, amp, alpine door speakers and under dash tweeters, trying to figure out what to do for a sub though :/ Motor and drive train are now 100% solid except a small stutter in acceleration out of the gate I believe is due to poor carb tuning. I have the seat out and interior gutted right now, going to lay some electric blue carpet in there tomorrow just in case its not a loud enough truck already haha. My TO DO List includes: Fixing the goddam horn wiring - honestly driving me BONKERS Replace broken / shoddy interior parts (everything but dash, gauges and seat) skyjacker 7000 hydro shocks (riding on leafs atm :/) replace defrost vaccuum pot edelbrock carb tinkering - need help new body mounts (try to level w/ trim on box!) find / make mirror trim to match on the passenger side of box disco ball - oh yeah fix lighter outlet wiring replace transfer case output shaft gasket - maybe silicon this time Take apart diff's and make sure they are ok Fix small leak at Rad - maybe its just a hose clamp? Should be good to go after that!! Truck has only been used for cutting laps, street queening and trips to dump (as pictured) so far because I haven't felt confident in being able to go wheeling without the above work being done yet. Honestly, i'm so glad to be finally getting everything taken care of (for now) so i can actually go out, thrash it around and GET IT DIRTY. It's been fun so far and i've learned tons so mission accomplished I guess. Hope you like her. Let me know if you have any advice or questions for me and if you are in Alberta drop me a msg and we'll go wheeling! Cheers, Barry Last edited by barrolde; 02-24-2011 at 05:11 AM. |

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
Hi Guys,
Bob - noted with thanks! A few more details, as it sits now its has a 350 with an unknown edelbrock carb, stock heads, edelbrock head covers, hedman headers, KN filter, dynaflow exhaust, 3" body lift, 4" suspension (broken), extra leafs, 3/4" ton axles and sitting on 37" procomp extreme AT's on 16" eagle alloy rims. Will post pics of the new carpet as soon as its in. Going to figure out exactly what diff's are on it now and make sure there are no shavings in the fluid! According to the dump, it weights about 2500Kg Last edited by barrolde; 02-24-2011 at 05:28 PM. |

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
looks like dana 44 front (44 5CF) and a 14 bolt GM 10.5 on the rear
I dont see any markings on my rear axle though, should be a 3/4 ton o 1 ton FFA for that diff though right? |

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
Great truck, reminds me a lot (style-wise) of my own. Just curious, what's up with the body lines between the bed and cab? Seems like some shims are missing or something. That truck is awesome though! Did you fabricate your own front bumper bracket to hide the body lift?

Went skiing in Revelstoke all weekend for a buddies stag but managed to get the carpet in before I left. Here is before and after pics, I like the blue color with it a lot. Excited to put everything back together in it now, was driving it sitting on a milk crate for a couple days haha.

Good day today, seats reinstalled and look great w/ the new carpet. Transfer case fluid changed and diff's opened up and cleaned.
Now to figure out where that leak in the rad is coming from!

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
More drivetrain fun today.. got the rear diff cover back on, letting the rtv cure overnight before I put fluid back in it though.
Remounted the tranny pan that was leaking with the help of these boards. My filter kit came with a rubber gasket so used that dry and hand tightened all bolts and then 'snug'd' them up. I got a torque driver but i dont think its very accurate at low settings so just went by feel.. really hope that pan doesn't leak again! Checked the vent tube and it was clean, it was a rebuilt transmission but in only a year ago and not offroaded since, also dipstick o-ring looked good. Was having a good day until i opened the dana 44 front diff and found the gears to be mangled up and the inside of the pumpkin top and front scored from metal kicking around in there. I'm going to have to do something about that but dont know what yet. Its a 44 with 4.10 gears i believe... i couldn't make sense of the #'s on the main gear, it read 1 23 79 dana d 18520 b3r19 05-11 anyone know what that means? Tomorrow i will add my fluids and hope everything holds! figure out what to do w/ the front end and finish putting the interior back together. How does a front diff get mangled like that? fluid was old but not low :/

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
Saga continues.. front end put on hold until its warm enough to venture out to picknpull.
Taking on electrical gremlin(s) now. Have been getting weird battery drain, seem to have it narrowed down to the alternator as its not showing more that 12v when truck is running and i'm suspecting there might be bad diodes that are causing the drain.. blew a fuse in my new multimeter trying to figure it out. LEARNING IS FUN

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
to get the gear ratio, count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion then divide the number of teeth on the ring by the number of teeth on the pinion.
for example 50 teeth divided by 15 teeth = 3.33 ratio |

Re: the green 1982 snottsdale - calgary
Thanks Jr, yep got that.
Rooted out my electrical gremlin... had a ground wire from the old 4 pin starter connected to the pos terminal of the new 3 term starter doh! it was pulling 1.8A w/ engine off hahah. Skyjacker shocks w/ blue boots and new window rubbers came in today. Also found a new CHROME instrument shroud, fuel tank filler neck, ducting to drivers side vent, gear select indicator and couple other goodies at pick n pull today. Checking out the trim and interior off all the different shape and sized chevy's is too much fun! More pics to come once the next round of work is done.
