O' the emissions/vacuum hose web we weave
Hello,
I just picked up a 1980 Chevy G-10 van for my work rig. It's sporting a 250 straight six with three on the tree and 38 k on the o.d. ( I'm thinking 138k). During my new purchase tune up I want to remove all the emissions gear to simplify things under the hood. We don't need to have it in Idaho! I'm planning to plug the holes in the exhaust manifolds after removing the "pulse air injection reaction system". Do I need to plug anything in the plenum on top of the valve cover? What's the best way to nix the egr system? Do I just cap off any vacume ports on the carb and intake that where conected to the smog canister? The exhaust needs to be reworked so the cat will be history. Any other ideas that will make this fella run better and use less fuel? Did I mention that it has 360 degree blue shag inside?

Just my $.02, but why not leave the emissions equipment in place? That would save you all of the modifications to patch things up. I would just tune it up and see how it runs. In my experience, removing the smog equipment did not help gas mileage or performance - but I am sure others will disagree.

Thanks for the compliments! It's hard finding a used van that isn't totaly hammered. I think this one was mostly just used as a car. A tune up and some paint and it should come out nice.
